“I’m as sure as I can be. I want him, Cam.”
“I know you do.” She smiles when Salome licks her chin. “I thought you’d grow out of it.”
I can’t decide if she’s glad or sad that I haven’t.
“He’s different, and he makes me feel different too.”
“You don’t have to rush into anything.”
“Which part of him not giving me any D made you think we were rushing into things, Camille? Sheeeesh. He wants to wait until our wedding night!”
Her smile turns into a smirk. “Oh.”
“Don’t you dare laugh!”
She hitches a shoulder. “After running circles around everyone your whole life, it’s nice that he doesn’t dance to your tune, isn’t it?”
My nose scrunches. “Yes.”
Though she laughs, it’s not malicious. There’s just a twinkle in her eye that I don’t trust.
“So, that’s the dress?”
“Yeah. And I love it. But…”
“But?”
“He sent over some emeralds and I don’t think it goes with the dress. And for an intro into high society, I don’t know if it has the right presence.”
“Show me?”
I drag the box onto my knee and pull out the silky fabric.
“Oh, he thought about you, didn’t he?”
I hate that I’m blushing. “Yeah.”
The dress is sassy. Modern. And young. Not in a bad way, but the complete opposite of the horrific monstrosity he sent me yesterday.
It’s short and playful and… I know some women would wear it to a gala, but I’m staking claims here.Thismanis mine…
“I see what you mean.” She studies the sweetheart neckline and the form-fitting skirt. “Very pretty but not grandiose enough.”
“Right?! I knew you’d get it. I feel like I need to make a statement and that dress says…”
“Sex kitten.”
Brennan winces. “I understand you’re a grown adult, Victoria, but I thought we agreed to never talk about sex in my presence?”
Cackling, I stop pushing my luck with him when the intercom sounds.
“That’ll be Inessa,” Camille chirps.
“I’ll get it and I’ll put this one to bed.” Tucking his phone away, Brennan kisses her temple before telling me, “We’ll be inviting you to a group chat where you can update your guards and they can cross-coordinate on the back end.”
“Are you cooperating with the Russians, Brennan? For lil ol’ me?”
“Been doing that since Inessa married Eoghan!”
