“Then helped her out of her fucking clothes?”

I suck in a breath. I knew this was how her mind would work, hence why I couldn’t tell her about the kiss.

“No, ba—Jade.” The image of Mila naked on the hotel bed flashes into my mind, and I squeeze my eyes shut, feeling sick to my stomach. “It’s not like that. Nothing happened. I passed out in a chair, babe.”

“Nothing happened?” Jade checks, and I am so glad she isn’t in front of me right now. She’d know I was lying. Apparently, I have ‘tells.’

“Nothing,” I whisper. “I swear.”

There’s a pause.

“I think you should come home, Devon.”

“What? Why?”

“Are you fuckingserious?”

“I told you—nothing happened. I’m not drinking for the rest of the conference.”

I can hear Jade breathing, almost like she’s crying.

“Jade?” I ask softly.

“I just—her, of all people, Devon. Why her?”

I sigh. “I know you don’t like her?—”

“Don’t like her?!” Jade interrupts. “She was after you the entire time we were together, Devon. She’s a nasty bitch; you just never saw it. Fuck knows why, because you’re not stupid.”

My chest aches. “I never once saw her be nasty to you, baby. I wouldn’t have hung around with her last night if I had known that, would I?”

“You slept in her fucking room!”

I wince. “Yeah, in a chair, and my back is killing me. I’m sorry, Jade.”

“It doesn’t matter. I don’t like the thought of you being with her when I’m not with you. I don’t trust herat all,Devon, and neither should you. Why was she in a fucking robe? Ugh!”

I say nothing because she’s right, of course.

“It’s what she slept in.”

More lies.

“I don’t give a fuck, Devon. Come home.”

“But this conference?—”

“It’s your call, but I can’t guarantee I’ll be here when you get back.”

Shock slices through me. “Jade! Don’t you believe me? I said, nothing happened!”

“I’ll believe you when you can look me in the eye and tell me nothing happened. Until then, no. I don’t believe you. Oh, and happy fucking anniversary.”

Then she hangs up.
