Wonderful.
I’ve become too attached to this job to leave, yet this doesn’t sit well with me.
He’s my ex.
“Hey, why the sad face?” Kiera frowns from the doorway.
I groan, waving her into my office. Kiera is a good friend, and despite her huge crush on Issac, she still seems to adore me despite watching us flirt all the time. “I’m just tired…”
Kiera makes a face, closing the door behind her. “I guess it doesn’t help that Blake’s back.”
Our eyes meet, and I cringe, prompting her to reach out to hold my hand. Her skin is warm and soft, and I close my eyes, letting her reassurance wash over me.
I’d told Kiera about Blake being my ex, but I hadn’t gone into detail.
“No, not really.” I squeeze her hand before releasing it. “He came by earlier, and I said I was sorry for his loss. He bit my head off.”
Kiera’s eyes widened. “Really?”
I nod. “Yeah. I was in here with Issac, and?—”
Kiera puts up a hand, silencing me. “There you go then. He saw you with Issac and got jealous.”
“Blake James?Jealous? No.” I shake my head with a wry smile.
The idea of Blake being jealous of me with anyone is laughable. He doesn’t care enough.
Kiera twirls her hair around her finger, watching me thoughtfully. “How did it end between you?”
It’s like she’s thrown a bucket of ice water over me. I’m paralyzed as the memory floods in. “Well, when he got what he wanted, he dumped me.” I shrug bitterly, remembering the moment.
FLASHBACK
“What do you mean?”
Blake sighed down the phone. That meant I wasn’t getting an answer anytime soon.
I stared at my reflection in the mirror, bracing myself for the words about to leave my lips.
My teary self looked back at me, not an iota of sympathy on her face.
You should’ve known what he was like, Danielle.
It’s Blake James!
“You’re breaking up with me?” I whispered, shuddering at the words. This couldn’t be happening.
“Danni, don’t make this difficult,” he said quietly.
There was a pause on the line, like he wanted to say something else.
“I’m sorry…but I can’t have any distractions.”
“Distractions?! You said you loved me!” I sobbed, knowing he hated it when I cried.
“Hey, I did. Ido. It’s just too serious between us. We’re too young.”
“Yet you love me? You’re a fucking liar.”
