What the fuck just happened?
Kiera strolls in some time later, doing a double take at the sight of me. “Did you have a bad night again?”
“Huh?”
“You look pale.” Kiera makes a face, nodding at the coffee in my hand. “You’re going to need something stronger than that. I’m going to Starbucks later; I’ll grab you a double shot.”
I blink like I’m in slow motion, the envelope in my hand weighing a ton. “Thanks.”
Who can I talk to?
Blake’s already told me it’s strictly confidential, but this is ahugedecision.
I could tear the contract up and tell Blake to fuck himself, but really?
This company is dear to me, and the decisions aren’t easy to make.
The thought of being by Blake’s side in business isn’t the worst scenario.
But pretending to be in love with him?
That’s a different matter.
What did that even involve?
I float through the day in a daze, missing vital conversations in meetings and annoying the hell out of Issac.
“Danielle, what’s up with you?” Issac asks over lunch, pushing a chocolate donut in my direction. “You look like you’ve died.”
“Gee, thanks.” Sarcasm is my best friend, but I just sound wounded.
Issac munches on his donut, studying me with a frown. “Seriously, talk to me.”
“I didn’t sleep well,” I lie, biting into the chocolate icing.
“Is something wrong?”
Yes. My ex just proposed to me with a contract.
“I just need an early night.”
Issac stops questioning me, and the conversation fizzles out.
Poor guy.
“Are we still on for our date?” Issac asks, arching a brow at me.
“Can I let you know? Sorry, maybe I’m coming down with something.”
Issac nods, reaching across the table to rest his hand on mine. “It’s okay, but don’t even think of calling in sick. I don’t think we could survive without you.”
Wonderful.
An hour later, I’m at my desk, the contract burning a hole in my bag.
I need to read it.
But not here.
