“Let’s chat,” Zebulund says coolly.
Whelp, we’re screwed.
“Sure. I’ll be out in a second,” Roe says.
“I’ll wait out here.”
As soon as I hear the bedroom door snick closed, I sit up, wide-eyed and panicked. My head throbs from the action but I’m humming with adrenaline again.
“What does he want?” I whisper and even to my own ears, it sounds frantic.
His head shakes back and forth as he pulls on his trousers from last night. The suspenders hang loose at his side.
“I don’t know.” He slips on a sweatshirt from his suitcase.
“What should I do?” I gnaw on my lip.
“Stay here. Pretend to be sleeping. And drink more water. You’re really pale.”
I suck in the lip I was chewing to keep from smirking at his concern for me.
He’s about to leave when I whisper, “Leave the door open. Just in case.”
He frowns at the idea but says, “Stay quiet.”
I throw out my hands in the “no duh” gesture.
As soon as he leaves the room, I creep to the door to listen.
“Mind if I make some coffee while we talk?” Roe asks.
I could kiss him.
“Not at all.”
Soon the heavenly sound of percolation and the smell of coffee drift my way.
“You’re having fun?” Zebulund asks.
“A little too much fun.”
“Good. Good.” Zebulund laughs his slimy laugh. “Wait until you see the fireworks tonight.”
“Get out?”
“I’m known for them.”
“Sweet.”
I silently gulp down the water and aspirin Roe left me and eat some nuts. Is he really here to discuss entertainment? I have decided to disregard Roe’s explicit instructions. We all knew that would happen.
“Listen,” Zebulund says with no warning, “About last night.”
I don’t know about Roe, but my heart moves up and takes residence in my throat.
“What’s up?” He clears his throat. Maybe his did too.
“What did you think of everything that happened?”
