“Oh?”
“Trustsnoone,” she slurs.
“I’ll make you one. Gin and tonic?”
She flips her hand up in a gesture that conveys “whatever floats your yacht” and I jump at the chance to make her unconscious.
“Rachel, how’d you get into all this?” she asks while I’m fixing her next drink.
“My aunt was really big into it.” It’s almost worrisome how good I am at lying. “She’s a big believer and taught me a lot. I’m mostly too busy but I like to help. When Roe mentioned it, I thought, why not?”
“I’ve heard Roe is tightlipped. How’d you find out about this talent of his?”
“By mistake. I walked in on him talking to someone once. He tried to play it off, but I sensed the spirit.”
“You’ve got a gift too?”
“Not as much as him.” Oh man, I wish I could record this conversation to show Roe later.
“What’s his deal? Is that why he’s so private?” She’s watching me closely through narrowed eyes. I suspect this may have been part of what Zebulund wanted from her and she knows it. Thankfully, so do I. She’s still on the clock for her husband.
“Partially, I suspect. You know he wants to be taken seriously. If this gets out, he knows nobody will believe him.”
“True. I don’t even believe this.” She blinks at me. “No offense.”
“None taken.” I hold up my hands. “Not for everyone.”
“You said partially.” She’s pretty shrewd for a drugged-up drunk.
“Well. Everyone has their demons.” I play coy.
If they think they can get answers out of me so easily, they’ve got another thing coming. She pats the chaise lounge next to her, dropping her feet as I deliver her drink.
“Sit here.”
I obey.
“It’s just us girls. You can tell me. I’m not going to tell anybody.” She takes a long sip of her drink and licks her lips.
Long pause. What can I say?
“He’s got a giant cock,” I deadpan.
I mean, it’s not that far off the truth. Even if it wasn’t the juicy gossip she was hoping for. She coughs on her drink and leans forward.
“What?”
“You can’t tell anybody.” I hide my face in my hands. “I can’t believe I told you.” When I peek at her through my fingers she’s still blinking. “Yeah,” I say, dead serious. “It’s actually a problem. For like wardrobe and his girlfriends. He gets horny too fast and he can pass out. You think oh sure, giant cock, great. In theory. But in practice…” I punch my fist against my palm. “Not so much.”
“No way.” She’s leaning forward so much she almost falls. “You’ve seen it?”
“One time,” I lean conspiratorially closer, “during an outfit change at a photo shoot.”
“And?” Her eyes are wide; they watch my mouth as I speak.
I glance around for effect and lean closer. “Are you familiar with butternut squash?”
“Shut up.”
