Okay, yeah. I’m sold.

I blow out a breath. “Okay.”

Ryan blinks. “Okay… as in okay?”

I nod quickly. “Yeah. Okay. But I’m not thinking about it any longer, because if I do, I will change my mind and pretend this conversation never happened.”

He laughs and then sticks out his hand. “Alright then. Operation Confuse the Hell Out of Everyone.”

I hesitate for a moment, but then grab his hand. “Deal.”

We shake hands, so there is no turning back now.

What the hell did I just agree to?

RYAN

I feel like a celebrity

I’ve successfully avoided making eye contact with Noah for three straight classes. Because how am I supposed to act normal when I’m going to be fake dating his sister? Fake. Date. His. Sister.

And if that isn't already enough, I’m also lying to him about it.

My thoughts are cut off when I spot Maddy walking through the cafeteria doors toward me—well, speed walking, actually. Her steps are small and stiff as she scans the room, like she’s expecting something to jump out at her. Jesus, she looks like she’s late for a very important exam. One hand grips the strap of her bag tightly, while the other twists a strand of her hair over and over again.

The second she spots me leaning against the wall in the corner, her shoulders drop just a little.

I push myself off the wall and run a hand through my curls as she comes to a stop in front of me. And I have to bite back a laugh, because her eyes are even wider than usual.

“You in a rush or something?” I ask her, a grin tugging at my mouth.

“No,” she says fast, her fingers fumbling with her hair. “I’m just freaking out.”

I snort. “Are you nervous?”

She snaps her head to me. “Yes, of course I’m nervous!”

I have to bite even harder to hold back that laugh, because she almost looks like a bunny when she is panicking.

“I’ve never done this before,” she whisper-shouts.

“Never done what exactly?” I raise my eyebrows, waiting for her to say it out loud, because her reaction is absolutely glorious. But she just vaguely gestures her hand between us, her eyes still wide with horror, so I lower my head and answer the question for her. “Fake date a very handsome guy?”

She smacks my arm, and the laugh finally escapes me. “Calm down, it’s gonna be fine.”

“They’re gonna see right through us,” she says, fumbling even more with her hair.

I shake my head. “Relax.”

“We’re gonna be arrested.”

I scoff. “Why would we get arrested?”

“I don't know! Treason?!”

“Chill out.”
