Freedom, traded for access.

Family protection, set aside for leverage she doesn’t yet have but clearly intends to build.

That kind of decision doesn’t come from impulse. It doesn’t come from fear, either. Fear seeks relief. Impulse seeks release.

This is neither. This is purpose. And purpose, once established, doesn’t dissolve under pressure. It adapts.

“Let her continue,” I say.

Luca nods, but I can see the question forming before he speaks it. “No intervention?”

“Only if required.”

That answer is precise enough to follow and broad enough to allow judgment. He understands the distinction.

“She’s chosen to stay,” I add. “Treat her accordingly.”

“Yes.” He doesn’t leave immediately. “There’s more.”

I look up.

“Dockside follow-up,” he continues. “Pier 14. Replacement installed. Audit completed.”

“And?”

“No additional discrepancies.”

“That’s expected,” I say. “Once correction becomes visible, mistakes stop.”

“For now.”

“For now is sufficient.”

He inclines his head slightly. “There’s also movement in Brooklyn,” he adds. “Two crews overlapping territory. Not ours.”

“Caruso?”

“Yes.”

I consider that for a moment. Caruso doesn’t move without intent, and he doesn’t test lines unless he believes something behind them has shifted.

“Send Marco,” I say. “Quietly. I want to know whether this is expansion or instability.”

“And if it’s expansion?”

“Then we decide whether to allow it or end it.”

Luca nods once. “And the council?”

“They’ve been informed.”

“That won’t satisfy them.”

“No,” I agree. “It won’t.”

When he leaves, the room returns to its usual state: ordered, mechanical, quiet in a way that suggests everything is functioning exactly as it should. I close the external file and reach for another.

Dante.
