“Baby, I’m so sorry. I know I’ve been acting a little crazy lately, but please charge my head, not my heart. How about I give you a full-body massage to help ease some tension? Then I’llgive you some space, and we can have a reset in the morning,” I offered, trying to compromise with him.

Reason shook his head, looking fed up.

“This will be my last time addressing this. Tomorrow is our gender reveal. Get yourself together, Saje. A nigga ain’t gon’ keep puttin’ up with this.”

Who the fuck are you talkin’ to, and what exactly does that mean?Is that a threat? That was what I wanted to ask him, but I held my tongue. I had struck a nerve this time, and now I had to find a way to get back in his good graces by tomorrow.

Reason stared at me long and hard, and then he swaggered away, looking angry and fine as fuck.

The day of the gender reveal had arrived, and for the first time since this whole surrogacy started, I was curious. Not curious about the gender, but more so about the bitch carrying my husband’s baby. Thoughts about how she looked crossed my mind. None of this was a thought until this morning. Maybe it was because I had to finally face the reality of this shit show Reason had put us in. Before, it was easier to act like it didn’t exist, because I didn’t have to deal with or see anything being paraded in my face.

After my argument with Reason, I almost said fuck it and told him I wouldn’t be there, but like I said, curiosity was getting the best of me. Especially after he thought it was a good idea to be selfish with the dick last night. For the first time, he slept on the couch like I was some bitch he wanted to stay far away from and not his wife. I was still pissed about it, but we had an image to uphold. Therefore, I decided to continue playing the good wifey role. If I didn’t want to lose my man, I had better keep upthe charade and put my acting skills to use like I’d been doing. It was a little too late to switch up and show my true colors now.

Truth was, Reason made this whole experience easy for me. He made all the decisions, paid for everything, took the lead in the planning, showed up for meetings, kept track of the updates, and anything else that was associated withhischild. I didn’t have to lift a finger, or use my brain, nor did I have to come out of pocket, which was how I preferred it to be.

Even with Reason doing it all, I still didn’t want this baby.

Reason and I hadn’t talked all morning, and I did random shit around our mansion to avoid him. Hopefully, by now he had cooled off. But just in case he was still in his feelings, I arranged for a separate driver to take me to the gender reveal location. Our original plan was to ride together, and to step out looking like the happiest power couple who was ecstatic about welcoming a new baby into our lives. My goodness, that was the furthest thing from the truth. Ironically, arriving in separate vehicles suited our situation more accurately.

I still had a few hours before the event, and an hour left before my glam crew and personal stylist showed up. Granted, everyone’s focus would be on finding out the sex of the baby, but unbeknownst to them, I didn’t give a fuck about that. My only concern was looking like the star I was.

My phone chimed, alerting me that I had a new notification. I retrieved the device from the pocket on my robe and tapped the notification. It opened the app for our security cameras, and I instantly rolled my eyes when I saw why I was getting this alert. Anytime someone pulled up to our gate, we were notified, and we would usually open the gate for our guests. This time, the bitch who I saw behind the wheel would have to continue waiting.

Reason’s mother could kiss the crack of my ass.

I didn’t see her much, but the times I did, it took everything in me not to show and tell her how I really felt. She couldn’t stand me, and at this point, I didn’t care. It didn’t stop Reason from marrying and staying with me. The woman could choke on rocks for all I cared.

“You didn’t hear the alert on your phone that someone was at the gate?” Reason appeared in the dining room with a menacing look written all over his face.

Clearly you did, nigga, so you can be the one to let your mama in.Instead, I said, “I heard my phone go off, but I was busy, so I didn’t get a chance to look at it yet.”

His jaw twitched. “Is that why you’re holding your phone with the security camera app open?” he quizzed with a smirk.

Shit, I’d been caught. Why didn’t I slip my phone back inside my pocket when he walked in? I couldn’t say anything or try to plead my case. I was busted.

Fuck it, I was going to defend myself. “Well, I did tap the notification, but when you came in here, I hadn’t looked at the screen yet.”

Reason looked like he didn’t believe me.

“Saje. I ain’t ’bout to argue with you again. But you just told me without telling me that you’re a liar. You’ve been walkin’ on thin ice.”

“What the fuck does that mean?” I barked, getting rid of the innocent wife role.

“Exactly what the fuck?—”

“Hey, son. What took you so long to open the gate?” His mother barged in, cutting him off.

Great, now my day is ruined before it even starts.

Without waiting for his response, she continued. “Oh, Reason! You don’t know how excited I am to meet the surrogate who will be making me a grandmother. My heart will be so full when I see my little grandbaby’s sweet face.” She beamed withpride, while I inwardly gagged at the fake shit, and her strong old lady perfume.

This bitch.

She finally looked my way, acknowledging my presence. “Saje,” she said dryly. “Hi, I didn’t notice you standing there.”

“Mrs. Brooklyn, hey,” I replied flatly, matching her energy. My attention shifted to my husband. “Reason, my love. I have to get ready for my glam crew’s arrival. I’ll let you and your mother catch up.”

“Hmph,” his mother pursed her lips. “Glam crew? It always has to be about you. Some things never change,” she added her unwanted opinion.
