“Emerson?” he practically spat, pointing aggressively at us. “This guy, this is the guy?”
Everyone stopped what they were doing.
Drew’s head shot up, flicking between the two of us. I could almost feel the second he made the connection to who this man was, his body clenching tight with unconcealed wrath.
He spun me round to face him, pointing at Richard. “This guy? This is him?”
He didn’t wait for me to confirm before crossing the room in a split second, like a viper ready to strike. Cooper moved between them at breakneck speed, his hand on Drew’s chest. Richard backed himself toward the door as Drew got right up in his face, towering over him.
“You’re lucky I’m not pummeling you into the wall for what you’ve done to her,” he snarled.
Richard smoothed down his coat as he tried to regain the composure he’d lost, but Drew and Cooper were paid a lot of money to be intimidating, and it was working.
“How unsophisticated and typical you sports players are, just like her loser brother, always resorting to your fists.” He looked down at Drew’s taped up hand. “Although it doesn’t look like yours is working very well.”
Drew inched another step forward, his voice threateningly low. “You come anywhere near her again and you’ll find out exactly how well my fists work. I will fuckingendyou.”
Even from across the room I could see Drew shaking with anger. I walked over and placed my hand on his chest, moving Cooper’s away, hoping to soothe him before turning around.
What had Jupiter called Richard? A dick weasel.
I swallowed the sudden urge to laugh in his face as I looked at him; he did kind of look like a dick weasel.
“Richard, I don’t know how to make this any clearer. Leave us alone, leave me alone.”
He looked at me, his eyes beady and cold. “Oh, Emerson, you’ll come running back when he dumps you on your ass. Just wait and see.”
I rolled my eyes, tugging on Drew’s hand to come back over and sit with me, but it was like trying to move a stubborn bull.
“Baby, come. He’s not worth it. Come on.”
Molly snapped out of the wide-eyed shock she’d held as the scene unfolded, rolling her shoulders, shifting back into professional mode.
“Doctor Jessop, I’m not sure why you felt the need to come into here in the first place. You are not on this case, so I suggest you leave.”
Richard startled as though he hadn’t even realized she was in the room. “Yes, Doctor Marks, my apologies. I just came in to check on his vitals.”
She crossed her arms over her chest, glaring at him. “That’s not your job.”
“Right, right,” he flustered. “I’ll be going back to rounds.”
His jaw clenched, looking between Drew and me, before he walked away. Cooper closed the door behind him.
“What just happened?”
I turned to Drew, cupping his face in my hands, making him look at me. “Baby, are you okay?”
“Yes. Fuck!” His eyes snapped away from where they’d been focused on the door and he pulled me against his strong chest, his heart pounding with adrenaline. “Are you?”
I nodded, moving to look at him again. “Yes, I’m fine. Thank you.”
He took a deep breath, visibly calming. “I was so close to beating the shit out of him, Luck. I fucking knew there was something dodgy about him yesterday.”
He dropped his mouth to mine, kissing me softly, both of us the elixir for the other. As we turned to walk back to our chair, everyone was staring, except Felix who was still asleep. It was so easy to forget anyone else was around when he kissed me.
“Are you both okay? What was that? What’s Super Creep got to do with Emerson?” Freddie got the questions in before anyone else could.
I sighed. “That was my ex-boyfriend.”
