Even saying it felt stupid. I felt like I was back in high school. But now I knew for sure she was definitely ignoring me.

Freddie leaned forward, giving me a kiss on the cheek. “You look good. You look steady. It’s good to see you up.”

“Yeah and he’s getting quicker too.”

Their eyes flicked over to Marco and then back at me, assessing me.

“That’s amazing!” Wolfie smiled wide, turning Flossie to face me. “See, Floss? Look how great your godfather is.”

I looked at her, her navy eyes wide open, staring at me as she gurgled, and my bad mood melted away. She was like human Xanax.

I gently stroked her head. She was so fucking cute. “Hi, Floss.”

She gurgled some more, then her face broke out with the most beautiful smile. I looked up at Wolfie and Freddie, my eyes wide in surprise. “She smiled.”

“Yeah, she started the other day. Jas can get bigger ones than me though. She’s a daddy’s girl for sure.”

Freddie winced, rubbing her belly. “Hey, can we go to your room? I want to sit down.”

“Yes, come on. Might take a while, but let’s go.” I turned to Marco. “You stopped the timer right? This chitchat can’t count in the round.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, but it’s starting again now, so get a move on.”

I moved the walker and we all stepped together, so slowly we were practically going backwards, but we got there eventually. Freddie eased herself down into her usual space on the couch, rubbing her belly, as I continued shuffling with the walker until I got to the bed. Marco helped me into it, propping some pillows behind me.

“You need anything else?”

“No I’m good, thanks, man.” I turned to Wolfie, “Can I have my goddaughter now please?”

Marco closed the door behind him as he walked out. Wolfie unstrapped the baby carrier and lifted Flossie out, placing her in my arms. She gurgled again, looking up at me with big wide eyes, smiling again. “Has she smiled at Drew yet?”

“No, you’re the first godfather she’s smiled at.”

I grinned down at her. “Yeah I am. Aren’t I? Because I’m the best, right?”

She gurgled in confirmation that I was. I knew it.

“Felix?”

I tore myself away from Flossie to look up at Freddie and Wolf, who were both staring at me.

“Yes?”

“What were you asking about Molly?”

My shoulders dropped, and I heaved a deep sigh. “Molly hasn’t been to see me.”

Even as I said it, I realized how much of a dick I sounded, which was made way worse by the look of confusion they were sharing.

Wolfie sat down in the chair. “She has. She was here yesterday, we were all in here, and the day before, and the day before that.”

“I was asleep.”

“What do you mean?”

“I haven’t seen or spoken to Molly since I was brought in and she saw me before surgery. I’ve texted her and she hasn’t replied. She’s definitely avoiding me. I know it. I just don’t know why.”

I rolled my eyes and threw my head back on the pillow in frustration. I was tired, my body hurt constantly, my pain meds had been reduced, and I hadn’t been sleeping properly because I kept having weird dreams which only left me feeling confused every time I woke up. And because I literally had nothing else to think about except my broken leg and fucked up knee.
