I rolled my eyes. “Stupid bro code.”
She smiled softly. “He was being protective, as all big brothers should be. That’s all. And Felix respected him too much.”
“So, what’s changed?”
“Well, it seems like his feelings have got the better of him.”
“Mom, I’ve never been able to hold down a relationship.”
She gave me another one of those mother looks, this time telling me she thought I was an idiot.
“That’s because you’ve never been in one you wanted to hold on to, and you use your job as an excuse. You don’t need to be working ninety hours, Molly, but you do need a life. You’re not a student anymore.” She sighed deeply. “Ma chérie, when it’s right, it’s right, and it all falls into place. It’s what happened with your father and me. It was so easy for me to stay in Canada with him. I can’t promise every day will be easy, but if you don’t try, I can promise you’ll regret it.”
She was right. As she always was. I would regret it. I’d regret it forever if I didn’t see what could happen.
“Merci, Mamon. Je t’aime.”
“You’re welcome, baby.”
I finished the last of my coffee and looked at my watch. “MamonI’m sorry but I need to go, I have consults this morning and I have to finish some paperwork before.”
“Okay,allons-y.” She stood up with me and we walked out together, heading for the elevators. In the distance I could hear a Christmas band playing carols.
She pulled me into a big hug.
“Thank you,Mamon. Thank you for coming to visit.”
She stroked my hair, holding my face for a kiss. “I’ll see you in a few days for Christmas. And with regards to Felix, you just need to relax and enjoy spending time together. It’s the holidays, have some fun and see what happens.”
“Okay.” I pressed the buttons for the elevator. “What are you doing now?”
She tied the belt on her coat. “I’m going to meet Diane for some last minute shopping, and then we’re going for an afternoon at the spa.”
Diane was Freddie and Wolfie’s mom. Their parents had been over since Florence had been born, so it was going to be a full Christmas. And with one baby and one on the way, plus my newly kick-started love life, it was shaping up to be a good holiday.
The elevator arrived and I kissed her cheek one last time before I got in, pressing the button for the surgical floor. “See you in a few days. Have fun shopping, and have fun at the spa.”
Man, I could use a day at the spa. I saw her waving as the doors closed, taking me to my floor.
I nearly toppled over trying to lift the giant vase of roses off my desk and move them to the coffee table. It must have taken two people to carry this in. I leaned in and inhaled deeply, they really smelled incredible. Grinning again, I flopped onto the couch and pulled my phone from my pocket, hitting dial on a number I knew by heart.
He was wearing a team hoodie the color of his eyes and they shone with equal parts amusement and happiness. My breath caught because he was easily the most beautiful man I’d ever seen, as though I’d taken off the blinders that usually protected me from the handsomeness which radiated off him. The blinders I’d been wearing for twelve years, protecting my heart.
“There’s my favorite surgeon.”
“Hey there.”
He relaxed back against the seat he was in, from the view moving behind him it looked like he was in the car. “Hi yourself. How’re you doing?”
“Good. I had a delivery today of the most insanely beautiful pink roses.”
“Oh yeah? Lucky girl.”
“I am. Thank you, Lex. They really are beautiful.”
“You’re welcome, Angel. So, what’ve you done today?”
“Not much, my mom came to see me.” I twirled a curl around my finger. “You didn’t tell me you saw her.”
