I turned to Felix. “I’ll meet you down there. I need to go to the bathroom anyway.”
“Okay.” A sly smile painted the corner of his lip as he leant down, tucking a curl behind my ear and kissed my cheek before walking off.
He definitely did look better, he was walking much straighter too, and his ass looked so good in those track pants. Hunter cleared his throat and I turned to find him staring at me with a raised eyebrow.
“What’s up, Hunt?”
“Molly, what’s going on with you and him?”
“What d’you mean?” I tried to move past him, but he blocked my way.
“Why were you just coming out of your office together?”
I stared at him, unclear why there’d been such a sudden interest in my personal life recently. “Why do you care?”
He shoved his hands aggressively into his pockets. “I don’t, I just want to know. Don’t you have surgeries this afternoon?”
“I did, they were cancelled.”
“Well, you can come and help me graft a nerve then. James got called into surgery.”
“No, I can’t, but you could try Brooke.”
His mouth set in a hard line. “I don’t want Brooke. Molly, what is going on with you? This past month you’ve been all over the place and I’ve barely seen you. And now you’re passing up a nerve graft. The Molly I used to know would have prized it out of my cold, dead hands.”
“Nothing is going on. My surgeries this afternoon were cancelled, and now I have somewhere else to be. This morning you accused me of working too much and now you’re saying I’m slacking. Make your mind up, Hunt. And unless you’ve got anything else to discuss with me, I’m going back downstairs.”
“With Felix Cleverly. Don’t try and tell me you’re just friends.”
My annoyance levels at Hunter would have normally hit red, but having a mid-afternoon orgasm really helped take the edge off my temper.
“If you must know, my sister-in-law is in labor downstairs, and Felix brought her in because the boys are travelling for away games. Our moms arrived and we came up here to give them some space.”
Technically all of that was true. But I certainly wasn’t going to elaborate on my relationship status with Hunter Reyes. He narrowed his eyes, making it very clear he didn’t believe me. Not that I gave a shit.
“Okay, are we done now? I’ll see you tomorrow. And stop checking up on me!”
He was still standing there, staring, as I got in the elevator. I ran into the bathroom before I reentered the labor and delivery floor and wished I’d gone slightly sooner. No wonder Hunter had been glaring, my face was still bright pink from the most powerful orgasm I’d ever had. I don’t even know what had come over me, taking my pants off, but whatever it was between us, I didn’t want to start it as Little Molly. He needed to see me as more than that. I stared at myself in the mirror as I pulled my hair tie out, tidying up all the strands which had come loose and securing it back up.
My God.
In all the years of fantasizing about Felix, I’d never been able to imagine that. I was a scientist at heart, even as a kid before I’d started studying medicine, I’d learned about physical reactions – molecules rearranging to create a physical change without altering their original structure. And that’s exactly what had happened to me, because I might look like Doctor MollyMarks on the outside, but on the inside, I was nothing but liquid. Forever altered. The change in me was tangible.
And it was fucking terrifying.
I washed my hands before I could fall down a black hole ofwhat if, hurrying out to the others for the latest baby update, finding Murray and Felix outside Freddie’s room. Murray grinned at me as I walked toward them. He’d lost his jacket and tie somewhere, his top button undone and his sleeves rolled up. I watched a pair of nurses pass them, their mouths slightly open and gawping.
“Hey, Mol.” Murray hugged me tightly and for what seemed like a lot longer than usual. “Didn’t get to say hi to you in all the fracas before.”
I felt a tug on my scrub top, turning to find Felix pulling me away and nearer into him, all while wearing a scowl aimed at Murray.
“What’s going on?”
He kissed my head. “Nothing. Murray’s just being a dick, is all.”
Murray let out a loud snort. “Nah. I like seeing you two together. You look good.”
I raised my eyebrows in surprise, looking up between him and Felix for an explanation. They were both very tall.
