“Great idea.” Diane stood up and stroked Freddie’s hair. “Are you going to be okay here?”
She nodded. “Yes, Mum, I’m fine. The girls are here.”
I looked at my mom, smiling my sweetest smile at her. “Can you bring some back for us too please?”
“Yes,chérie.” She put her coat on, passing Diane’s to her.
“Call if you want anything else. We won’t be long.” Diane shut the door behind her before she’d barely finished speaking.
We all stared at the door and the very abrupt exit.
“Twenty bucks they’ve gone for a glass of wine.”
“I’d take that bet, but I’d lose.” I turned to Freddie as she laughed. “You okay? How’re you doing?”
She shrugged. “I’ll be better once your brother gets here.”
“He’ll be here soon.”
Wolfie was sealing up her breast milk and packing it away in the special carrier when she chimed in. “It was a good job Felix was with you though, Francesco.”
“I know, I was lucky actually.” She started laughing. “Poor Felix, I thought he was going to shit himself when my water broke.”
I burst out laughing. “Yeah, I can imagine.”
She shifted in the bed, trying to sit up a bit more without getting caught in the wires coming off her. “But he was so brilliant and sweet and calm. And surprisingly organized.”
“Is everything okay between you two now?”
My head whipped round to Wolfie. “What do you mean?
Did they know? I didn’t think anyone knew expect Drew, and now Murray. I was pretty sure he hadn’t told the girls because Cooper didn’t know and Freddie would’ve told Cooper. AndWolfie would have told Freddie. And Jasper. Who would’ve told Coop. No, they couldn’t know.
Also, I wanted to tell them. I didn’t want them to hear it second hand.
Oh my God. Spiraling.
I forced myself to blink so Wolf wouldn’t immediately notice that I’d momentarily gone crazy.
“Felix was convinced you were ignoring him.”
“Oh.” My heart rate returned to normal, buying myself some time by picking an invisible piece of lint off my scrub pants. I didn’t like lying to them, but Felix wanted to speak to Cooper first and I respected that. “Yeah, I dunno what that was about. He was on so much medication, but we’re good.”
Better than good.
My insides still hadn’t solidified. I could still feel his breath on my neck, his warms hands roaming across my body, his fingers pumping inside me. I could still taste him on the tip of my tongue.
Yes. We were better than good.
And he was mine.Finally.
I just needed to get past the dreaded two-month mark.
“I knew that was the case. I told him he was imagining it, but he was so upset. I’ve never seen him so upset before.”
“Really?”
She nodded. “He wouldn’t stop going on about it.”
