“It’s a boy,” he sniffed, before breaking into full blown sobs. “I have a son.”
I got up to hug him but didn’t get there in time before my dad scooped him into a crushing embrace, letting Coop cry onto his shoulder. I grabbed Wolfie, who was jumping up and down, joining in her squealing, only letting go when she complained her boobs were sore from bouncing too much. By the time Cooper stopped sobbing and wiped his face, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
“You can come and see them soon. They’re just cleaning up and Freddie’s trying to have a little nap.”
Murray and Felix pulled him into a hug, slapping his back. “Congratulations, dude. Has he got a name?”
Cooper nodded. “Yes. Samson, after Freddie’s dad.”
Freddie’s biological parents had died in a car crash when she was very little, and as their best friends, Wolfie and Murray’s parents had adopted her and raised her as their own.
“That’s perfect.” I wiped my own tears away. “Oh my God, I can’t believe I’m an auntie.”
Felix pulled me into his side, kissing me on the head. “Congratulations.”
I jumped at the sound of a champagne cork popping loudly, Murray at the helm.
“Another baby, it’s a Christmas miracle.”
Wolfie rolled her eyes. “Shut up, Murray. You idiot.”
Chapter 32
Ibent down and picked up the piece of paper which had fallen from my pocket as I pulled my phone out, unfolding it, just able to make out the numbers scrawled across it in vaguely familiar handwriting. These pants had clearly been through the laundry since I’d been handed this, but for the life of me I couldn’t remember where it had come from.
Or from whom.
I wracked my brain. I never accepted any numbers handed to me by bunnies, so I knew it wasn’t that. It kind of looked like Coach’s writing but…
Fuck.
The number Coach gave me that I promised to call on the way home from the day we met in his office. The day I’d got stuck in the bath. The day Jupiter and Drew came over. The day they’d convinced me to kidnap Molly. It had only been a couple of weeks ago, but so much had changed since then that it could have been a lifetime.
I hadn’t seen her much since last week, only managing to steal secret kisses by dropping into the hospital between her surgeries. She’d been called away during Christmas Day for an emergency involving two kids who’d collided on sleds, and Ihadn’t got anywhere near touching her in the way I wanted, and I definitely hadn’t tasted her again. But as I also still hadn’t managed to talk to Cooper, so the space between us probably wasn’t a bad thing, because being in her presence and not touching her had suddenly become like asking a kid to stand in the middle of a candy store and not feast.
And it wasn’t like I hadn’t tried, but getting time in with a new parent was harder than I expected. Even when I’d been over there, he was either too tired or Freddie had interrupted us with baby chat. And while I was more than happy to sit and listen to how exhausted they were, my patience was definitely being tested.
I looked at the numbers again and typed out what I thought I could make out, hoping I got them right, because I really didn’t want to ask Coach for them again.
She picked up after the third ring.
“Yes?”
And then I realized I didn’t actually know her name or anything about her, beside her number, and Coach warning me to be on my best behavior.
“Um, hello. Hi. My name is Felix Cleverly. I was given this number by Coach Campbell and told to call it.”
She giggled quietly. “Do you always follow orders like that?”
Okay, that wasn’t the response I was expecting, but at least I seemed to have got the numbers right.
“Yeah, I do when they come from Coach.”
“That’s good to know. So, Felix Cleverly, how can I help you?”
“He wants me to come and see you for PT sessions.”
She chuckled again. “Does he now? And I assume this has nothing to do with your accident and more that I keep telling him I don’t want to come and work at the club?”
