“And what?”
“Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”
I sighed. “Nothing, babe, honestly. I’m just super tired and I’m going to go to bed.”
His eyes narrowed. “Luck, I’ll call you back in twenty.”
He hung up.
Well, that was weird. My chest sunk like a lead weight; the happiness I’d felt at seeing his face vanished. My head fell back against the wall, where I was still standing. Today had been a roller coaster ride, and I was currently in the front carriage, stuck in the Tunnel of Doom and Gloom.
Which wasn’t even a thing.
Ugh.
I’d been so wrapped up in his bubble, cocooned in the massive arms he’d surrounded me with every night, and now that I was going to bed without them, I felt empty.
What was happening to me?
I was probably getting my period.
With a grumble, I walked into my bedroom, dressing in sweatpants and a hoodie. I was only going to solve this with a Netflix marathon, but before I could flop on the sofa, a pounding at my door had me jumping out of my skin for the second time.
Double ugh.
But then my stomach performed a triple somersault, leaving me breathless, because the most beautiful man I’d ever seen in my life was standing in the doorway when I opened it, his huge body taking up the entire door frame.
His warm, delicious scent overpowered my senses, and hot tears started working their way back up my thickening throat.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice breaking.
He walked inside, kicking the door shut with his foot and pulled me into his arms, holding me tight, kissing my head. “Two reasons. First, because something’s wrong and I want to know what.”
I sunk into his massive chest, absorbing his strength, allowing myself to feel protected. He was so big he made me feel tiny and delicate, something I’d never had before, and now relished to the point of addiction.
He moved us over to the couch, sitting me on his lap, stroking my hair and holding me tight.
“What’s the other reason?”
“Because waking up next to you is something I thought about every day for a year, and I’m going to do it every opportunity I can, including tomorrow. The season starts in a few days and I’m going to be away for the first two games, so I’m getting my time in. I want to hold on to all the days I can between away stretches.”
Was this guy for real?
This giant wall of muscle was made of nothing but marshmallow, and he was so insanely sweet I was going to need a trip to the dentist. I turned around in his lap so I could see him properly.
His eyes bore into mine, brimming with warmth and concern. He leaned down and brushed my lips with his.
“Tell me, Luck.”
I bit my cheek nervously, taking a deep breath.
“Today when I came out of the class, Mikey and some of the girls were hanging around the desk, and they were talking about you and the boys coming into the class.”
I dropped my head, only for Drew to lift my chin up. “Em, what were they saying?”
“Jessie said her friend had sex with you last year.”
I didn’t want to repeat the rest. Even thinking it still made me nauseous.
