“Well, I’ll be doing it more often then.” He linked our fingers together in what had become our habit, mine crossed over my chest to find his draped around my shoulder, because it was the closest we could get while we still walked side by side. “Come on, let’s get to the car.”
We turned the corner and he unlocked it, opening the door for me to get in. He shut it as I sat down and then jumped in his side.
“Do you need anything from your place before we go to the country?”
I shook my head. “No, I think I have stuff there already.”
I’d been storing a few things at his place in the country and at the loft, although he had been complaining there wasn’t nearly enough. He’d designated me a drawer and an area in the closet, and he’d made it very clear he wanted it full.
Yeah, my boyfriend was pretty effing cute.
He started the engine. “Oh, I have news.”
I looked at him with expectant eyes.
“Wolfie went into labor.”
“What?! How have you made me wait for that information?” I started bouncing on my seat, my hands clasped. “Oh my God, that’s so exciting! Does that mean Jasper isn’t going tomorrow?”
“Yeah, he was having a couple of weeks off when the baby came. Thank fuck it started today and not while we were away.”
“Where is she? Is she in hospital? Has it arrived yet? What’s happening?”
He stared at me.
“Um, Luck, I don’t know the answers to any of those questions. I just know from the group text that Wolf went into labor.”
I stopped bouncing. “Oh, okay. Why are you looking so happy with yourself then?”
“Because Felix and I have a bet on who’ll be godfather. Obviously it’ll be me.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Okay, time to go home. I’m leaving for nine days and we’re having an early night.”
And with one hand on my lap, he put the car into drive and turned towards the country.
Chapter 16
“Babe, are you sure you haven’t gone a bit overboard?”
Emerson was staring at the trunk of my SUV, the trunk which was currently filled with two giant cuddly bears, a lion, a dozen pink helium balloons, as well as several bags full of pink baby clothes. I’d had to put the back seats down for it all to fit.
Overboard was a matter of opinion.
But yes, I’d definitely gone overboard, and definitely got carried away because baby clothes were so tiny and cute, especially pink ones. And as the self-named godfather, it was my duty to spoil her. And by her, I meant Florence Mae Jacobs.
Or Flossie, as I was planning on calling her.
Jasper and Wolfie’s new baby daughter.
“Also, what are you wearing? Have you passed a mirror?”
I looked down at the sweater I’d ordered – orange with a big 3D pumpkin on the front and fucking funny. It was Halloween, and in lieu of the usual team party which had been moved to New Year’s, Jasper was having a few of us over to smoke some metaphorical cigars, wet the baby’s head, and officially name me as godfather.
At least he’d better.
And Felix and I had worn our usual matching outfits, just on a smaller scale.
