As soon as they all looked over at him, as if daring him to say anything about the law, the man raised his hands.
“I’m off duty,” Max said. “I’m not hearing shit, and for the record, I knowPLENTYof good lawyers who would get you off. Wasn’t he with you, Dex, when he is accused of committing a crime?”
That said it all.
Dex nodded.
“Yep. We were building a bookshelf, in case any of my detectives were to ask. Oh, look. It’ll be Quinn. I handpicked him to handle it,” he said, proving that case against anyone would be derailed pretty damn fast.
“Thanks,” Johnny said.
Because she hated seeing her Marines upset, she patted Johnny’s cheek.
He wasn’t handling this.
She was.
There was no way she was letting them risk their freedom to take out the trash. The badge allowed her to do that, and Gabe had sanctioned it.
This was hers to deal with, and she would.
Mark.
Her.
Words.
“I’ll get him justice. I promised him that. I meant more with his burial.”
Johnny wiped his eyes.
“He’d want to be buried in his Blues, someplace nice. He’d want a tree and some birds. You know how much he likes nature. Jet loved a walk through the woods to gather his thoughts and refocus when he was scattered. He was always walking the dogs through the woods.”
She was curious.
“Not in Arlington?” she asked.
He shook his head.
“While that’s an honor, he’d want to be with his family. That’s you guys. He’d want to be where you could visit him, and he could be by nature. He’d want to be where the dogs could go, and we all could remember how great a guy he was,” he said, a tear slipping from his lashes.
Nothing rocked a person more than seeing a tough, strong, battle-hardened Marine weep.
It did for her, anyway.
Well, then, if this was his wish, Jet was going to get his last wish if it was the last thing she did.
The plan had officially changed.
Pulling out her phone, she made a call, knowing he’d answer.
Callen would always take her calls, even if they were eyeball deep in shit.
“Angel,” Callen said, his heart thumping in his chest. “God! Let me come help you,” he said. “You shouldn’t be alone out there. I’ll get on a jet..."
That was sweet, but no.
He was safer where he was.
