“I mean it this time.”

“Alright, she won’t hear it from me.” I get out, lock the car, and lean against it.

“Don’t lie,” she chuckles.

“I promise.” I sigh and rub my head. “I need you here. I’m comfortable with being alone. I work alone, live alone, and can go days without speaking to anyone. Being here…” I glance around, dropping my hand. “It’s overstimulating. The people here mean everything to her, and I want to be comfortable with them. I could disappear with her, never see another soul again, and be happy forever. She needs them.”

“And you’ll do whatever she needs. I’m proud of you, but I know the mask you wear can become tiring. Don’t lose yourself in the process of giving her everything,” she lectures.

“Do you and Mom compare notes?” I ask.

“No, we just know the man you are.”

“The thing is,” I rasp. “In the end, giving her what she wants and needs provides me with everything I want.”

“Fuck,” she clucks. “You’re good.”

“Issy,” I rumble.

“Alright. I’ll stop. Send me the place and time.”

“Thank you.”

“Bye, Brother. I can’t wait to see you.”

“Same, Sis. Later.” I hang up and stand straight.

Crossing things off my list in my head, I'm anxious to check out of my room and get back to my mate. I won’t be back for lunch, so I’ll order something to be delivered. She needs to eat more. I’m more comfortable in jeans and t-shirts, but my apparel needs an upgrade. The last time I wore a suit was after my dad died. Since we didn’t have a funeral, we dressed up months later and had a quiet moment together to remember him. Before Rylee, my purpose here was simple and focused on one thing. I wasn’t concerned about sightseeing, so I don’t know where to start. I can track, kill, and dispose of a body.

Finding a suit shouldn’t be that hard.

“Damn,” Haven whistles as she opens the door. “I was not expecting this.” She motions toward my body. “I will deny everything if you tell my mates I looked at you in any kind of way.”

“My lips are sealed.” I step inside and drop my bag.

“Rylee is getting ready. Thanks for the food.” She glances over her shoulder and then back at me. “She ate, and had a silly smile on her face,” she whispers.

“Good,” I whisper back, grinning.

I place the flowers on the table.

“I’m off.” She grabs her purse and moves into the hall. “I need time to look as good as the two of you.”

“See you soon,” I say, and shut the door.

My phone buzzes. Sally is a force. She’s been updating me throughout the day. I take it out of my pocket.

Everything’s set.

Don’t disappoint me.

Give Rylee a night to remember.

I will do my best.

Thanks

Gotta go.
