“Do you think you’re going to get back together?”

“I’m not letting anything ruin what we have,” I murmur. “Everything is working well, and if I get back with Finn and something happens between us, then it’ll be awful for us to co-parent.”

Alice hums. “I understand.”

Jade turns to the counter and grabs a new cup before pouring in some lemonade. “Here.”

“Thanks,” I say gratefully as I take it. “I’m gonna head to the toilet.”

“Need us to come?”

“I’m good. See you guys in a second.”

As I worm my way between the people in the kitchen and head down the hall to the bathroom, my shoulder knocks into another. I glance up into brown eyes and blink in surprise.

“Maya.” Alfie takes in my face before his expression widens. “You made it.”

“Yeah,” I chuckle awkwardly. “I made it.”

His eyes soften, and he steps into me to allow someone to pass behind him. My back presses against the wall, and I’m aware of how close he is to my chest.

“Sorry,” he says before stepping back and studying my attire. “Wow. You look amazing.”

My fingers clutch onto my cup tighter. “Thanks, it was a very last-minute choice. I wasn’t even gonna come.”

“I like it,” he says before dragging a hand through his hair. “A lot.”

For a moment, my heart beats out of rhythm.

“Sorry.” He laughs as his gaze flicks over the very obvious blush on my cheeks. “I have to be honest, and I’m glad you decided to come.”

“I kinda forced myself. It’s just weird being out for the first time since having Skye,” I say to change the subject. “Everything is a little bit overwhelming.”

Alfie steps into me slightly. “Well, if you ever need five minutes for a breather, I’ll be there for you.”

My brows crease as I stare up at him. “But I don’t even know you?”

“Am I not allowed to get to know you?”

I narrow my eyes as I attempt to figure out his game. “Depends on what reason.”

“Because I think you’re a cool girl.” He shrugs.

A snort bursts out of me, and it’s far from attractive. “Cool? I think you’ve hit your head.”

“Even if I did.” He grins. “Still wouldn’t change what I think.”

I roll my eyes. “Oh, please.”

“Oh, please, what?”

“You’re friends with Reese, and I don’t trust that guy.”

Alfie tilts his head. “Reese is an asshole. I know.”

“Then why do you hang around him?”

“Because we’re both on the football team.” He takes a sip of his drink. “And when Reese gets you under his wing, sometimes it’s hard to get out.”
