Moving back to the table, I picked up the attachment I needed and a long, thick screw. “Yes, this will do. How many do you think I’ll need, Dmitri?”

The man was chained to the board, but my brother held him now with a hand to his chest. “Ummm, I’d say twelve to sixteen, brother.”

Humming, I started to pick them up one by one from the pile on the table, putting them in my back pocket when I had enough.

“Savage, but I like it,” I smirked and moved back to where they were. “These are special screws, señor. I designed them, but it was my second in command who made them. We’re quite a clever bunch, don’t you think?”

The man’s eyes widened even more, and he let out a high-pitched keening noise from behind the cloth we’d stuffed into his mouth when he’d started screaming as I attached the bit to the machine.

Pulling the gag from his mouth, Dmitri asked, “Have you learned to speak English yet, ese?”

“I don’t know anything,” the man stuttered. “I was only there to see my daughter.”

Tapping the screw I’d kept out on the end of the drill as the board was raised and secured in place so that it was standing up now, I shrugged as I closed the last small bit of distance.

“I understand. I, too, break onto the floor to get to my sons, carrying the names of other babies in the nursery for shits and giggles. Dmitri here likes to go around cuddling them all, though. He’s a Russian Mary Poppins.”

Dmitri snorted at this and rolled his eyes, and I noticed the shoulders of the few men I could see around us shaking at the comparison. My brother was as far from that description as I was from being a teddy bear, but it confused the man who was looking at me like I’d grown two heads.

“Now, what were you really there for?”

“I- I told you—” he stuttered, and a puddle started to form at his feet.

Letting out a whistle from between my teeth, I winced. “That’s a shame. I liked those pants on you, Spanish.”

“Could have been worse,” Dmitri shrugged, moving to the side to avoid the puddle. “Could’ve been shit.”

Widening my eyes and looking at him, I nodded. “Yeah, now that would’ve been embarrassing.”

“Nah,” Dmitri waved a hand at me like I was talking nonsense. “We’re all friends here, and nothing’s embarrassing when you’re around friends. Right, ese?” He turned back to the man and patted him on the shoulder.

By this point, the guy wasn’t sure what to think, but he hadn’t made the right choice and told us what we needed to know. If he had, this would’ve been over relatively painlessly for him.

Looking beside us at where my men were, I ordered, “Hold him.”

Quickly moving into place, one of them held his arm straight for me and anchored it against the board. Placing the sharp end of the screw against the skin, I pressed the button and pushed down on it, ignoring his screaming while I watched as it went through until it hit the bone.

That’s when I released the button and looked him in the eye. “Do you have an answer yet, Spanish?”

When he didn’t reply, I pressed the trigger again and put more weight behind it to get it through the bone. This time I didn’t stop until the screw was pressed tightly against the surrounding area of skin on the outside and the tip was through the back of the board.

Pulling another one out of my pocket, I moved up his arm and repeated it two more times. By the time I was done, the man was gasping in breaths as he looked at me.

“I’m going to put another three in your other arm and four in each leg. After that, I’m going to revert to more common ways to get you to talk, and that won’t please me. I hate having to use them because they’re so unoriginal, but I didn’t bring any of my special toys with me tonight, so they’ll have to do.

“After that, I have one final screw. It’s longer than these and is designed to go right here,” I tapped him in the middle of the forehead, and then stepped to the side so he could see the table where it was resting. “Comprende?”

“I can’t,” he rasped, his body shaking violently.

“Oh well,” I answered brightly. “I always wanted to be a handyman when I was a kid. I loved the idea of building things with my hands, but it doesn’t really go with being a member of the Bratva, does it?”

After that, I slowly and methodically drilled the screws through him, leaning to the side to avoid his vomit twice.

When I was done, I moved back to the table and picked up a long thin needle-like probe, and walked back to him, leaning behind the board to grab the cable that would send volts of electricity through it into his body.
