CHAPTER5
Tucker’s entrance was more of a stumble than anything. “Heyyy, Meggy.” The first word was exaggerated.
It wasn’t like Tucker to be stumbling drunk, but that didn’t stop her from getting irritated at the nickname she hated.
“Megan. What’s up?”
“Nothing, nothing.” He bent down and lifted the bed skirt. And then moved over to the closet door and opened and closed it.
“Tucker, what the hell are you doing?” She had a pretty good idea but wanted him to say it out loud.
“Checking for monstersobviously.”
Megan was still in bed, the comforter around her waist. “What kind of monsters do you think live under my bed at the farmhouse, exactly?”
“You never know.” He winked and left the room.
“Weirdo!” she called after him as he shut her door.
She was in her late twenties and didn’t need her older brother checking her room for boys. At the same time, she was grateful he hadn’t shown up ten minutes earlier.
A softer knock sounded a few moments later.
Expecting her brother again, Megan groaned, “Go away, Tucker.”
“I’m not Tucker, let me in.”
Megan hauled out of bed and opened the door to find Caleb with a bowl of pretzels and two bottles of water.
Her face got hot, and she all but yanked him into the room. Megan checked the hallway to make sure nobody else was there or had seen anything. She ensured the door was locked before she turned around to Caleb. “I am so sorry. Tucker was in here looking around.”
“What? Why?” He’d situated himself on the bed and put the glass on the nightstand.
She sighed and climbed into bed and settled against the pillows. “I’m assuming he was looking to make sure that none of the single groomsmen were in here to ‘ruin my reputation’ or something stupid like that.”
Caleb glanced at the door and laughed. “Yeah, probably. Good thing he wasn’t here fifteen minutes ago.”
“That was my thought, too.” She took a small handful of pretzels from the bowl. “Thanks for the food.”
“Any time.” There he was, across from her on the bed, familiar and comfortable.
If she didn’t know better, she’d think they could make a great couple. “If you want to go back to your room to go to sleep, you can, you know.”
He shifted on the bed. “I can’t, actually. My room is uh…occupied.”
“What do you mean?”
“Tyler is…busy. He should have put a tie or something on the door.” Caleb sat on the edge of her bed. Megan’s blood heated, even after everything they’d done earlier.
Then understanding clicked. “Did you walk in on him with someone? Who was it?”
“The lights were off so I couldn’t tell. But I will never unhear that.”
Megan didn’t even try to stop the laugh. “You poor thing.”
Caleb took a deep breath and seemed to gather himself. “I didn’t mean to wake you up. I’ll go and get comfortable on one of the couches in the den.”
“You mean the super-small couches in the room next to the office?” Megan looked him up and down. The thought of his huge body trying to squeeze onto those loveseats was almost comical. There was no way he’d get any sleep. “That’s ridiculous.”
