Caleb reached for the door, but Megan held him back. “Wait, don’t open it yet. I don’t know what to say.”
“To Henry?”
She nodded. “And to everyone else. Rose is going to have to talk to Henry at some point and will have to handle the fallout from this. But right now, it’s on me to tell everyone in there that the bride isn’t coming and there will be no happily-ever-after today.”
Caleb stepped in front of her and used his finger to tilt her chin up. The concern was clear in his green eyes. Megan waited for a heartbeat. Waited for him to see her fear, to see the truth. She loved him but what if it wasn’t enough? What if his feelings were still malleable enough to be scared away again? What if he didn’t stay?
He must have seen the questions in her expression because he gave her a sad smile. “I’ll pull Henry aside and tell him she’s not coming.”
If Rose couldn’t marry Henry – if Rose, who had seemed so in love and so sure of her decision until this morning, couldn’t go through with the wedding, then what chance did she and Caleb stand?
Things were so complicated. If it was meant to be, should it be so terrifying? Shouldn’t there be some level of certainty?
As they stood outside the door, his fingers lingering on her chin, Megan searched Caleb’s eyes, his face, for any sign of how he felt, of what was on his mind.
“Are you ready?” Caleb’s voice was soft, and he dropped his hand back to his side.
No. “Yes, I’m ready.” She still had no idea what she was going to tell everyone, but as Caleb opened the door, Megan stepped into the church with her heart breaking – for herself or for Rose, she couldn’t tell.
