It was exactly what she wanted. Constant access to her was prohibited. She was afraid of how much faster and further our situation would develop. So, she tried keeping me at arm’s length. I wouldn’t demand her digits. I’d done that already. Instead, I’d let her assume she was steering the wheel.

Truthfully, her distance was teaching me a few things about myself. Things I wouldn’t have known hadn’t she returned to Dooley or given me the time of day.

I’m a yearner.

I yearn deeply. And, the yearning consumes me easily.

I would’ve settled. If she hadn’t returned and I pursued anyone else, she’d be second place. Always.

I’d never forgive myself for not stepping to Hyph earlier, saving her the heartache she experienced and letting her meet my parents.

The locks turned. My heart sped up a bit, drumming against my chest.

Calm down, nigga.

The suggestion was pointless. I was milliseconds away from having my future right in front of me. I was like a grade school boy about to kiss his first crush.

And there she was. Wrapped in a long flowy dress, Hyphen stepped onto the porch as I pulled the door open.

“Look at you,” I exclaimed.

“You like it?”

I wasn’t used to seeing Hyphen fully clothed. It was summer in Dooley. No one was fully clothed. Niggas had their shirts off. Broads had their asses out. The heat didn’t require many threads.

However, this was nice. It softened Hyphen. It played right into the vision of our future. By no means did I want to alter her appearance or preference, but I’d look forward to the days she switched that shit up on a nigga.

“I’m fucking with it. For sho.”

“Good, cause I was just asking. I really don’t care if you like it. I like it.”

“You a motherfucker, Hyph,” I laughed. I’d fallen for her bullshit again.

She returned with laughter.

“Seriously, I am happy you like it.”

“You ready, Trouble?”

“I’m ready.”

I closed her front door, but not before locking it. She used the key to lock the deadbolt for extra security.
