Before I could respond, I heard screams and shouting as the sudden cloud of black smoke suddenly sucked back into the lake like it was being dragged into the water. Everyone was shouting for people to move, and back up until the area settled. The waters were dark and calm, forming a small mist over the surface that began to spread.
“They’re going to have to lock everything down until we can figure out what’s going on,” someone said from behind. “The entire Underground has to be locked down.”
The woman finished my hand and without a word, walked off to help the next person. Harvey was giving out orders when he glanced my way and blew me an air kiss. I started to say something when my phone rang deep within my bra, and I smiled when I saw the name.
“Asha–––”
“Maggie is awake! You gotta get out here!”
Chapter Twenty-One
Bellamy Holmes
I sat down on the chair that faced down a hallway where my sister was being held in the back room. The house was busy with healers moving around, Raven and my mother were trying to clean up while draining whatever blood was left from the bodies they brought back. Himora was here. Along with Asha and the nymph named Isis. The princess chick was with them as they listened to her tell the wonderful adventures of her and Maggie, and wherever the fuck they’ve been at. Namir finally calmed down enough to shift back into his human form. They kept him outside, away from the house to keep everyone else safe. After a few attempts of clawing at the bedroom door that kept Maggie separated, he was essentially put down and pulled away from her until he returned to his human form. So occasionally I would get up and stalk towards the back room, grab the knob and press my ear against the door, still hearing furniture move around but this time, as I listened, it was quiet.
Pushing the door open with a shove, I barged right in and saw my sister fully clothed in a large t-shirt with sweatpants as smaller objects such as a remote, toilet paper, kids’ toys, and shoes floated towards her body as she inhaled and pulled away with each exhale. She wasn’t breathing as hard, but I walked further into the room, ducking from a shoe drawing towards her before sitting back on the bed. Her body inhaled hard just as everything fell to the floor with me catching a few items beforethey could hit her. Maggie slowly turned her body around to lay on her back and I could see a slit view of her red eyes peering at me.
“I told you if you ever feed, you need to tell me,” I said, trying to hide my anger.
Her brows came together before she groaned and stretched.
“It’s…not what you think,” she muttered before coughing. My face cracked, feeling my eyes burn as whatever tough exterior I tried to display as the big brother, failed. Any sign of weakness on my sister, I wore it like it was my own pain and took it to heart. I should have been there. I haven’t even heard from Birdie and…FUCK HER. My family is the only thing that matters to me at this point, and I never thought I would say that in my life but when I saw my sister, I saw life, love, and happiness. Everything I wanted, she was it and I should have done more to protect that.
“Why is your boyfriend trying to kill you?” I asked. I saw a smile crack as I stared adoringly at her.
“Call it a twisted fate,” she muttered.
“Are y'all good?”
Maggie paused for a moment.
“I dunno…”
“Do you remember anything?” I asked, wondering if this was going to be a repeat of the white church. She turned to her side, getting comfortable against the pillow and sighed. Her low gaze blinked once as she stared at the wall before her.
“I remember…everything.”
Maggie Grey
What a freaking world I live in… I didn’t recognize the Hey Arnold sheets I was laying in nor the room, but I turned back over after telling Bellamy to give me a minute. I just stared at the ceiling. I was starving for one, but I was afraid to question whether it was for actual food or something else.
God, I hope it was for actual food. The thought of biting a human or putting my teeth to flesh just…Gross Still, I couldn’t help but think about the disappointed look on Gaia’s face when she realized I was only half of what she wanted me to be…or expected me to be.
Damn it. All of that and I still need to get a hold of my parents. I sat up, pulling myself from the bed as I stared at the random items on the floor. With a wave of my hand, I attempted to draw the roll of tissue to me, hoping to levitate it in the air. Nothing. Of course. I’m still Maggie Grey after all but something was definitely different. I stared at the tissue again before groaning as I reached down to pick it up off the floor to wipe my face.
“Okay so he would have told me if something happened to my friends.” Which means they were alive and probably nearby. Namir was probably here. God, I don’t even know how to apologize to him, but it had to happen. I don’t even know if he wanted to see me let alone speak, but things were going tobe different. It only felt like a few days but here, a few months have already passed. I wasn’t sure where our relationship was heading. I wasn’t the same woman as before and knowing that we…are fated in some way, I just…I don’t know. I wanted to take time to learn about myself.
“Maybe I’m powerful enough to break whatever curse is on my family,” I said as I looked down at my hands. I could see my veins trailing my skin before seeping back in, disappearing altogether. Standing up, I looked down at my body and the random male clothes I wore before looking around the room. The single plant in the plot leaned towards me. The rug inched towards my feet, bunching up against my bare toes and the walls expanded, breathing in and out in response to me. I closed my eyes, listening to everything from my own heartbeat to the chatter of the trees in the distance. They were talking amongst themselves, whispering about wolves and creatures wandering around. Their voices alone sounded like something that carried in the wind, deep and full of vibrations. Opening my eyes, I smiled as my dark brown hair was suddenly bleeding back to white. The small light from the window shined down like the moon’s very own spotlight on me.There is a deeper connection I’m feeling towards…everything. I’m naturally tapping into it. I just need to work on my spiritual side, but it’s there. I felt the connection to the moon stronger than ever now.
“Okay, apologize to Namir, see my friends, and then we find a way to get my parents. After all of this…I still haven’t found a way to reach my family, but I meant what I said. They were all I had left, and it wasn’t much of us. I was prepared to do whatever it takes to––– The sudden sound of heavy footsteps above caught my attention as I looked up at the ceiling, seeing the dust chip away with each step.
“STOP ALL THAT DAMN RUNNING IN MY HOUSE BEFORE I MAKE YOU PICK A SWITCH FROM MY GOOD TREE!” A voice shouted. The door suddenly burst open as a little girl with a red satin bonnet on her head, came barging in. She wore a pink night gown with a cartoon pig on the front and pink slippers. Her eyes widened as she placed her hands on her hips with a proud stance and raise of her chin.
“Well don’t just stand there. Come give yo Auntie a hug.”
I thought I misheard when my head shot forward, confused.
“My…who?”
