I half laugh, half sob as I open my eyes to see Flynn’s beautiful face smiling at me.
“I don’t know. What does a knife say when you’re running late?”
Flynn grins down at me, looking tired but alive. “Chop, chop.”

LACHLAN AND WRIGHT SITTING IN A TREE
Flynn
Wright stormsinto my bedroom and I try not to imagine killing her for taking Hazel’s attention away from me.
“That man is an asshole,” Wright growls.
Hazel presses a smile between her lips and leans into my side where we’re sitting against the headboard. I’ve been stuck in this bed for over a day now on Lachlan’s orders and the only reason I’ve listened to him is because Hazel’s been here with me. I’m thinking of milking it for another couple of days just to keep her by my side.
“What’s he done now?” Hazel asks.
“He wouldn’t let me in until I gave up my knives.” Wright scowls, pacing across the room. “I swear to god Hazel if he doesn’t give them back to me, I’m going to stab him.”
“With what knife?” I smirk.
Wright pins me with a vicious look. “Hazel was right. You’re not funny.”
I gasp in mock offense and bring my hand to my chest. “Lilac, I think I’m dying.”
Hazel knocks the back of her hand into my good side. “Okay, thatis not funny. Too soon for dying jokes.”
“At least this one has a sense of humor,” Wright snarks. “Lachlan probably watches comedies with a straight face and a stick up his ass.”
I snort.
“Here,” Wright dumps the backpack she’s carrying on the end of the bed, “fresh clothes.”
Hazel sits up. “Thank you. What about work?”
“I told them your great gran died and you’re traveling for the funeral. I wanted to go with Mr. McStuffin’s brother Paws McDuff but Olivia talked me out of it.”
“Remind me to thank her,” Hazel says through a smile.
Wright tilts her head, taking a moment to assess Hazel. “You doing okay?”
Hazel nods. “Yeah. I’m good.”
“Alright. I’m going to go annoy the asshole until he gives me my knives back.”
Wright stomps out of the room and Hazel twists to look at me. “I think she likes him.”
I reach up and tuck a strand of wavy hair behind Hazel’s ear. “Howareyou doing?”
Hazel shrugs, her gaze dropping to the forest green comforter. “Better now that you’re alright.”
I trace my thumb over the gray smudge under her eye. “You’re not sleeping.”
“I keep seeing the knife going into his eye.”
I run my hand around to the back of her neck and squeeze. “He deserved to die, Hazel.”
