“Like I give a damn,” he snarled. “Why didn’t you tell him about me?”

“How could I do that?” I snapped. “How could I say I have a boyfriend if that’ll get back to my father?—”

“Fuck this.” He stormed off and headed back toward the doorway.

“What are you doing?” I called after him.

“I’m gonna tell him.” He turned back to me. “I’m going to tell him in front of everyone and God, and if he has a problem with it, I’ll shove him in that fucking coffin next to Edoardo.”

“You’re fucking insane.”

“Oh baby, you haven’t seen nothing yet.” He turned toward the doorway that led back to the church.

“Wolfe, stop.”

He ignored me.

“I said, stop.”

“I’m done with this.”

I had to run in my heels to catch him before he walked into the church and cornered my father at the worst possible time. Not only would my father be unhappy, but he would be humiliated by Wolfe and feel disrespected by his doing this on such a difficult day for him. I grabbed him by the arm and tried to jerk him back, but it was like tugging on a wall. “Wolfe.”

He started to drag me with him.

“Wolfe, listen to me,” I said in a panic. “Please.”

That word had some kind of hold on him because he stopped dragging me across the floor and turned back to me. But nuclear explosions were still going off in his eyes. I couldn’t imagine being an enemy to this man, because I was the woman in his bed and I was even scared of him. “We agreed we would tell him together.”

“Alright, here we go.”

“Wolfe. This is not the right time.”

“That asshole wouldn’t have come close to you if he’d known you were mine. That entire room deserves to know that you’re mine. You expect me to fucking stand there while some little boy goes up to bat and tries to hit a home run on my woman?”

“Look, nothing happened.”

“My woman. My property. Nobody—and I mean fucking nobody—trespasses on my property. You set foot on my front lawn, and you get a bullet in your head. You break the lock on my door and try to get inside, you’ll choke on my knife. Same fucking transgression.”

“He didn’t know?—”

“Exactly.” He moved forward, forcing me backward as he started to back me up toward the windows. “Because you keep me on this goddamn leash. It’s bullshit, and I’m fucking sick of it. Don’t act like you wouldn’t have lost your fucking mind if some woman had tried to get my dick and I’d just played along.”

“I didn’t play along.”

“I’m your man.” He slammed his fist into his chest. “And you should have told him that—proudly.”

“I am proud, Wolfe. You need to calm down because you can’t see straight right now?—”

“Youcan’t see straight,” he snapped. “My mind is perfectly fucking clear.”

“Look, listen to me. We haveoneshot at this.” I held my finger. “And I’m not dragging my feet?—”

“All you’ve done is drag your feet?—”

“Shut your mouth while I’m talking.”

He immediately clenched his jaw, and there was a flash in his eyes, rage mixed with something else.
