He really didn’t seem like the type to sing in the shower.
I caught the end of a sentence. “… either they have the money today, or we’ll have the less nice Pierce brother stop by their place for a visit.”
…What?
It took effort to close my jaw as my brain worked a mile a minute just to try and understand. Was Noah seriously hiding in the bathroom with the shower on?
I couldn’t hear another voice, so he must’ve been on the phone.
“The west drop spot. Take Adrian with you,” Noah said, and the swift command made my hackles rise.
Drop spot?I mouthed in confusion as I pulled back to look at the door. It held no answers.
Money. Drop Spot.
I’d never heard him talk like this before.
So secretive.
Commanding.
While locked in a bathroom.
I pressed closer to the door until my cheek and chest flattened against the textured wood, but Noah’s voice was still muffled.
“I can’t today. I already made plans… It doesn’t matter who they’re with… You know you nag worse than most mothers do, right?”
A weight settled in my stomach. He had plans withmetoday. He didn’t want this person to know that?
My eyes narrowed, but I pushed back the lingering mistress thoughts.
“Relax. She doesn’t know anything… No. Not a clue… She’s harmless, Julian. Trust me.”
I stared at the doorframe and swallowed hard, but he wasn’t done yet.
“I told you not to worry about it. Just get this done,” Noah said, and the steel in his voice sent a shock up my arm.
I jerked back from the door, stung. The walls of the hallway felt closer than before, and my tongue stuck to the dry roof of my mouth as I tried to swallow again. Shocked back to life, I retraced my steps to the bedroom with my heart thundering in my chest.
Maybe it’d be best to wait and shower by myself.
Noah’s words played through my mind on repeat.
Money.
Drop spot.
She doesn’t know anything.
Not a clue.
Just get this done.
I stood next to the bed, at a loss and wondering if I should be confronting him right now.
“He was talking about me, right?” I asked the empty room. I tossed my clothes on the bed and rubbed a hand over my chest. The shower was still on, but I barely heard it over my heartbeat in my ears. “There’s no way he wasn’t talking about me.”
She doesn’t know anything.
