Emma: That’s a start. It’s not a cupcake, but I’ll give you brownie points for trying.

Cupcake Thief: Brownie points? Really? How many?

Emma: Five.

Cupcake Thief: Wow, five whole points. How many do I need for a brownie?

Emma: At least fifty. Plus a replacement for that cupcake.

Cupcake Thief: You drive a hard bargain. When’s your next gig?

Butterflies took off in my stomach. He wanted to see me again? I locked the screen and flipped the phone over in my hands as I took a deep breath before responding.

Emma: No clue. I don’t really have a set schedule.

Cupcake Thief: New to the whole catering business?

Emma: Newer than you are to the sneaking business. How’d you get my number?

Cupcake Thief: A magician never tells. ;) The things I do to talk to a pretty girl…

I chewed on my lip. He was such a flirt.

Emma: Did it involve my defenseless backpack left all by its lonesome in Mr. Everton’s van?

Cupcake Thief: Let’s just say you aren’t the only one capable of pilfering through catering vans, but otherwise my lips are sealed.

I pursed my lips to hide a smile as my thumbs flew over the screen.

Emma: Mr. Everton warned me about you.

There was another pause—longer this time—and Professor Whidden managed to go through six presentation slides before Finn texted back.

Cupcake Thief: What’d he say?

Emma: He said you’re bad news.

Cupcake Thief: You’re a big girl, Cupcake. You can make your own decisions.

I chewed on my lip, deciding to be direct.

Emma: … Are you bad news?

Cupcake Thief: For rabbits who don’t like confined spaces, maybe. But for you? Never.

Never.

Well crap, he was definitely somewhat interested. Which was already about ten times more interested than Noah was. Finn may have stolen my cupcake, but I’d already seen that he was fun and could take a good joke. Not to mention incredibly easy on the eyes. I felt like I already knew more about him from two meetings than I did the guy I’d been crushing on for weeks now.

Finn was handsome and playful and loved sweets. Whywouldn’tI go for it?

Emma: Then Mr. Everton must be wrong. Up for teaching me how to pull a rabbit out of a hat? :)

I cringed a bit after sending it, hoping I wasn’t too lame, but the three little dots on Finn’s side popped up instantly.

Cupcake Thief: Mark my words, I’ll turn you into a master magician in no time, sweets.

An anticipatory smile bloomed as I pictured him showing up with a cape and top hat at the next party I catered.
