I may have spent a little extra time admiring the smooth line of his jaw.
I wanted to touch it.
I tore my eyes away and rested my head on the pillow.
His hand was sprawled out on the comforter between us, and I supposed it couldn’t hurt to hold it in mine. We’d already held hands before, so it wasn’t like I was taking advantage of the situation…
I reached out and entwined my fingers with his.
That ended up being a mistake, because his hand was all kinds of warm and butterfly-inducing. And maybe I was the one drugged, because his hand didn’t feel like nearly enough. I wanted more.
So, I scooted closer and leaned my head on Noah’s shoulder before cuddling my legs against his. He smelled like rain and aftershave, and I wanted to eat him up.
I slid my thumb delicately against the skin between his thumb and forefinger. Rain was pattering against the window, and it wasn’t long before I was lulled to sleep as well.
It wasn’t what I’d imagined would happen when Noah came back from Seattle, but I wasn’t complaining.
I never thought I’d be so grateful for thunder.
CHAPTER25
An Invitation
Dear PoliceWho Are Possibly Reading This in the Event I Was Arrested,
I swear I didn’t mean to drug him. It was an accident. I didn’t do anything to his defenseless body while he was passed out in my bed—I swear!
I might’ve stared a little. I admit it, okay?
But that’s not a crime. You can’t charge someone for staring. (Right?)
And. There. Was. No. Touching.
Thoughts about touching? Sure.
But you can’t throw me in jail for that. I have rights!
Okay, fine, I held his hand. You caught me.
And we might’ve snuggled a little.Is that a crime?
Then sue me!
Wait, don’t sue me.
Also—if any non-officers are reading this, please ignore. It’s a joke I’m playing on a friend. Not real. Totally didn’t happen. (Police, if you’re still here… this doesn’t count as perjury, okay? I’m pretty sure you have to be under oath for that.)
Currently rethinking all my life choices,
Emma

What I hadn’t expected Saturday morning was waking up to Teresa’s beaming face across the room from me, grinning ear to ear like the cat who caught the canary.
Thrown off by her alarming look, it took my sluggish brain a moment to remember the events of the night before. I jerked around, only to find the bed empty. Sliding a hand across the comforter, it felt cold.
“Prince Charming ducked out of here an hour ago,” Teresa offered helpfully.
