Eyes wide, I wheezed out a weak “Hey?—”
His free hand pushed down on the back of my head, and I caught a mouthful of comforter.
“Who are you?” he demanded, and his deep voice promised violence if I didn’t give him the right answer.
Not that I could even speakwith my face smooshed into the mattress.
My heart fought to explode out of my chest, and I wiggled against his iron hold with everything I had.
He didn’t budge.
What the heck was happening?
One moment I’d been gearing up for a comfy cuddle session, then the next he had pinned me facedown with both arms restrained behind my back and his hand mashing my face into the mattress.
I couldn’t breathe.
My client was going to smother me to death.
Struggling against the lack of oxygen, I had two realizations once it sank in that I was about to die.
One, this would be a mortifying cause of death for the true crime podcast that would inevitably cover my murder one day. And two, my landlord would probably end up with custody of my cat after my death.
And Whiskey couldn’t stand her chicken liver cat treats.

Cade
There was a unicorn in my bed.
Either jet lag was causing bizarre hallucinations, or I’d woken up to a fluffy rainbow unicorn attacking me.
Well, a woman in unicorn clothing.
Which was… arguably stranger.
When all she did after I pinned her was try to pitifully wiggle free, I repeated myself, “Who are you?”
She wrenched her head back, gasping for air. “Oh my god, how did you do that? You moved so fast.”
I pushed her face back into the mattress. “Who are you?”
She squeaked—actuallysqueaked, as if she weren’t the one who’d attacked first—and stiffened under me.
I yanked her arms back further. “Answer me.”
“Ow!I’m Ellie with S.C.S!” The rushed words were muffled against the mattress, and I eased the pressure on her head. She huffed. “I’ll have you know you are breaking about a dozen rules right now. I have no choice but to tell my supervisor about this.”
I stared at the ridiculous sparkly horn sticking up from the top of her hood. She may as well have been speaking a different language. “Your what?”
“My boss.” Giving up her fight, she slumped against the bed with a sigh. “Can you please let me up now? This is assault, not to mention extremely uncomfortable.”
Assault?
She was the one who’d attacked me.
