Another card sat waiting inside.

Suck and Blow:

Place a playing card between yours and your partner’s lips. With each player staying on their designated side of the tiki torches, “suck” and “blow” to weave the card between each torch. Hands must be kept behind your backs. If a card drops before finishing, return to the start.

I stared at the card in disbelief.

A juvenile game like Suck and Blow was the perfect opportunity for me and Ellie to make a comeback.

I just hadn’t counted on Harrison’s growing frustration making Ellie laugh before I could get the card placed between our lips.

“Suck harder, Maddie!”

“I’m sucking as hard as I can!”

“Last night proved that’s a lie.”

“Oh my god, you’re such an idiot?—”

“Breathe, everyone!” Dr. Lovejoy ran up to Harrison and Madison with a pained smile. “This is supposed to be afunactivity. You two go back to the start and try to work together this time, yes?”

“I am working together.” Harrison scowled. “If Maddie would just suck the card like she sucked?—”

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence,” Madison warned, earning a snort from Ellie right as I wedged the card between our lips. “Say another word, and I’ll tell everyone about our wedding night.”

Harrison was suspiciously quiet after that, which only made Ellie laugh harder—and our card fell to the deck.

“Sorry!” she breathed between laughs as I picked up the card. “I can’t stop laughing. This is so silly.”

I failed to see the humor.

By now, all four teams were at the tiki torches. At least Vlad seemed more interested in stealing kisses from Piper than racing, while Fletcher and Candace were too busy yelling at each other to even start the task.

Unfortunately, my brother and his wife had stopped bickering long enough to focus on moving the card. They were in it to win, and we only had one game left after this one.

I wasn’t losing to my little brother. Not again.

After flexing my hand, I wedged the card between my and Ellie’s lips, smooshed our faces together, and shuffled toward the first torch.

As soon as we pulled apart and I inhaled quickly, the card dropped.

Shit.

We failed three more times before reaching the second torch, and I even growled at one point—startling Ellie enough to drop the card right after she picked it up.

“Oops!” She crouched to scoop it up but hesitated after standing. She eyed me warily. “You’re getting frustrated, aren’t you?”

“I’m not frustrated,” I said measuredly, sparing a glance at Harrison already halfway down his row of torches.

Ellie winced and fidgeted with the card. “But you are, and it’s making me nervous. If I get flustered, then we’ll never get through this.”
