Didn’t I know it…

“I went to see her the other night. She doesn’t handle storms very well, so I wanted to make sure she was okay.” She got this look in her eyes as she talked about her best friend. The love she had for Blair was evident on her face.

“Oh really, and was she?”

She laughed. “Actually, she was. She had company over, so I would say she was well taken care of.”

My face scorched at the memory of exactly how Blair was cared for…

“I tried to pry, but she won’t tell me who it was. She seemed to be happy, though.” She shrugged.

I didn’t let myself ask for more details. “Well, that’s good.”

“She usually tells me if she’s seeing someone, and it’s been a while since I’ve heard about anything.”

I scolded myself for the slight smile that tugged on my lips at the thought of Blair not being with anyone else. We slept together once, and it wouldn’t happen again, so I had no right to feel any sort of claim on her.

I needed this subject to change. I couldn’t talk about her anymore. “So, have you talked to Fallon or Mackenzie? You know they’re getting married, right?”

She laughed. “Yeah, I know. I ran into Mackenzie the other day. She apologized for the hundredth time and told me. I’m happy for them. That situation was weird, but it’s laughable now, and I’m glad we can all be friends. It must be nice to find your other half. Not all of us can be that lucky. To find someone who envelops all your thoughts during all hours of the day. Someone you just want tobe around, even if it’s just to look at them. I would give anything to have a feeling like that, you know?”

Yeah, Cara, it’s really something…

I cleared my throat. “Uhh… yeah, totally.”

She laughed. “Oh, ignore me. I’m just in my feelings right now. I know relationships aren’t really your thing. Let’s change the subject.”

They didn’t used to be my thing, but… sometimes people’s opinions on life could change.

“You know me so well.” I laughed nervously. I had to get it together.

We finished our lunch before heading to the club for our weekly game.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Drea

“So, have you and Blair tried to kill each other yet?I’m surprised Cara doesn’t attend every meeting between you two.” Penelope laughed.

It had been a few weeks since our “meeting,” and I would be lying if I wasn’t tempted to call her at least a few times a week for a repeat. As much as I liked Cara, I wasn’t interested in having Mother Goose around asking questions or even worse, finding out about what happened.

I rolled my eyes. “We are adults. We can be civil… sometimes. No one has been threatened, yet. It’s actually been going pretty decent, to be honest. We have a mutual understanding.”

Fallon looked at me skeptically. “What, are you two best friends now? A month ago you wanted to strangle her.”

I tried to hide my smile at the memory of her strangling my face with her thighs as she was coming apart from my touch. “We are not best friends, love. That spot is taken already. But I guess you could call us casual acquaintances?”

She snorted. “Okay, if you say so. Anyway, are you bringing anyone to the wedding?”

“I still can’t believe you’re getting married!” Penelope grinned widely at our friend.

It was still weird to hear Fallon talking about marriage. How did time pass by so fast? Pen was trying to get pregnant and Fallon had found her other half. Was I the only one refusing to grow up?

A softer smile replaced the playful look on her face. “Every day I wake up, thinking it’s all a dream, but then I turn to see Mackenzie next to me and I realize it’s not. I’m really getting married, you guys.”

Tears started forming behind her eyes, and I playfully swatted at her. “All right, that’s enough. You better not cry or you’re going to make us cry!”

“Exactly! We are insanely happy for you, babe,” Penelope added. “We love you, and we can’t even put into words how it feels to see you with your person.”
