She walked around the room, pushing her hands through her hair and gulping nervously.
After the guard bowed his head and walked out of the room, Dani turned to me.“Biast killed his own father.I don’t believe it.I … he hated the man … but …”
Eros tensed his jaw at the mention of his name and sat up in the bed.
I gazed at them.“What went on between them?”I asked, referring to Dani and Biast.
Something had gone on, yet I couldn’t place it.The way she had spoken to him at the party that first night, the way she had threatened to take him to bed and to suck his soul right out of his body. She had known him, and she had known him for quite some time.
“I don’t want to talk about it right now.”
Dani rushed to the door while tying a robe around her waist.“We have to talk to the other commanders.I need information.Something.Meet me in the meeting room in five minutes. The commanders should be here soon.”
She disappeared through the door, and just as I was about to follow her, Eros grabbed my wrist.
“Sathanus is dead. Two of the original seven commanders are dead.An angel has fallen.Dani told me there is a Two-Faced Prophet …” He furrowed his brows.“Be careful.”
After dressing, we walked to the meeting room, where all the other commanders were waiting.Except Dani and Sathanus.Dani hurried into the room, greeting everyone.
The Greed queen was fitted with diamonds and the finest golds. The Envy commander wore a dress stolen from the Greeds.Sloth was smoking a blunt in the corner.Gluttony was finishing off a chocolate bar.
I sat at the head of the table, and Dani sat at the other end.
She leaned forward in her dress, breasts pressing against the table.“Sathanus is dead?”
“That’s the rumor,” Greed said.“Now what is this meeting about, and why is it so urgent?”
I sat up in my chair.“Demons are rising.”I nodded to Dani.“First, the commander of Lust. Now, Biast Sathanus.”I stood up.“Angels are falling.Biast found one in Wrath about a week ago. There is a Two-Faced Prophet on the loose down in the Kingdom of Envy.”
“That means we must prepare,” Dani said.
“The beginning of the end is approaching.Faster than we all thought.”
Thirty-Six
The commanders whisperedto themselves about the beginning of the end, prophecies made thousands and thousands of years ago about an Unholy Trinity, over and over again.I went to speak more, but I didn’t even want to waste my breath on commanders who didn’t want to hear a thing I was saying.
Someone banged on the door, and I rolled my eyes, sat back in my chair, and took a swig of the Vemon I had brought for this exact reason.Nothing got done with these lousy leaders. The knock came again.Whoever it was didn’t take the fucking hint to leave.
Dani stood from the table and walked over, her hips swinging from side to side. There were two guards at the door that whispered something to her.Her eyes widened, and all the blood drained from that pretty face of hers.
I sat up in my chair, never having seen Dani look so terrified since she had become commander, and watched her react to the guards.
She was shaking her head, her brows furrowed, muttering, “Are you sure?”repeatedly.
Eros followed after her, his arm curling around her waist. She said something to him that I couldn’t quite hear, and he clenched his jaw and looked at …me.
“Lucifer,” he said, nodding to the hallway.
Damn, it couldn’t be that bad.It was probably nothing, nothing at all.I dismissed all of the other commanders, who took all the damn time in the world to leave me in peace.
When they all disappeared into the hallway, I stood from my seat.“Is it that bad that you needmefor it?”
Dani and Eros gazed at each other, and she frowned.I could feel her pain, how hurt she felt … and it hurt me too.I hadn’t felt this bad since I had been in Heaven with Raphaela when I first started sleeping with Eros, when I saw her perfect fucking face the morning after and she asked me how everything was with him.
“Lucifer,” Eros started, still hesitant on what to say.
Dani stared up at me with big hazel eyes.“Luci,” she whispered, “someone else has fallen.”
