If she ever let me, I’d prove her so wrong.

“Has it really been five years?”

“Close to six now,” Violet grumbled into her glass. “I either get ghosted or a dumbass excuse.”

“What was Officer Hottie’s?”

“An icicle fell on his car. In June.”

Eva’s eyebrow shot up. I’d be hearing about that later.

“Did you ask You Know Who about it?”

Violet rolled her eyes. “Yes. He could neither confirm nor deny. Whatever. It doesn’t matter.”

“Is that why you’re avoiding him?”

“I’m not avoiding, I’m ignoring. There’s a difference.”

Eva scoffed. “Okay, then what did he do to deserve that?”

I felt my eyebrows crinkle. First, she was threatening my life if I showed up here tonight and now, she was asking questions on my behalf? What the hell was she playing at? And would she tell me about it the next time I saw her?

“Nothing… He just… I don’t know. It would sound stupid leaving my mouth, but it makes sense in my brain so it can stay there.”

“Try me.”

Violet sighed. “He was just everywhere. I was arrested; he was there. I was visiting you; he was there. I’m walking home; he magically appears to keep me company. I was getting too comfortable, too relaxed. I don’t want to get used to him being around all the time because one day he won’t be.”

“Why do you think that?”

“He’s a villain, Eva. One way or another, it’s going to catch up with him and he’ll either be arrested or killed. And I…I just can’t.”

If she stabbed me in the gut, it would have been less painful.

“So am I, V. You haven’t pushed me away.”

“He’s different,” Violet muttered into her drink before taking a sip.

“V! We’re up next!” Amber came up behind her and kissed her cheek.

“Ew!” Violet ran her hand down her face. “Amber that was all saliva. You know I hate that.”

“Come on stage or I’ll do it again.”

“I’m not nearly drunk enough to get up there. You guys go now, I’ll join the next group.” She took a big sip of her drink, caught the bartender’s attention, pointed at her glass, and held up one finger.

He nodded with a smile. My eyes narrowed; he hadn’t smiled at Eva like that.

“Boo! You love singing!”

“In the shower. Where no one can hear me.”

“Is that so?”

Oh good, Angry Icicle decided to join the conversation. I wasnota fan of the way he was running his eyes all over her. Like he was picturing her in the shower. Naked. With water droplets?—

Nope. Stop that right now.
