“How do you figure?”

“Your freezing power is the one that sealed the wounds and kept you alive long enough to get the bullets out. Whether you were using it consciously or not, it was still working while you were travelling through your shadows to get to me. Plus, while I was taking said bullets out, your shadows were hovering. Those holes still closed.”

I opened my mouth to tell her that wasn’t true. I shut it a half second later. How had I never thought about that? I sighed and sat up.

“Way to take a guy right out of the mood by making him think.” I sighed again as I raked a hand through my hair. “I never thought about it before. I’d always assumed the cold side of me did the killing and the healing while the shadows did the spying. But maybe both sides work together to heal? Or you’re right and thinking too much in the beginning fucked me up. I tried for months before giving up, but I haven’t tried since.”

“We should work on it.”

“We?”

“Yeah. I’ll help you work on it, distract you so you’re not thinking too much.” She flashed me a wicked grin. “And you can help me try and trigger whatever power you think I might have.”

“Later. Mood, officially back.”

She grabbed my t-shirt, pulling me on top of her, and mumbled into my lips, “Insatiable.”

My fingers slipped between her legs to find her already dripping for me. I grinned.

“I’m not the only one.”

“I guess that makes us a good match then.”

I’d say we’re a perfect match.

The words were in my head, but I swear she heard them based on the grin she wore before she kissed me again.

THE VILLAIN

It wasdark and Violet was having a nap. Apparently, I was wearing her out. Meanwhile, I was just trying to pay her back for her stubbornness from the other night. You know, where she refused to tap out—even though I’d been shot seven times—and kept me up all night. Now I was rested, fully healed, and ready to go. It wasn’t my fault she couldn’t keep up.

That was a lie.

I would love to believe I was the reason she was so tired, but she was giving me a run for my money. Her exhaustion came from her lack of sleep the last two nights. Although…I was the reason she didn’t sleep, so I take that back.

Anyway, I was rummaging around the kitchen as quietly as I could. It was 6 p.m., and I knew she’d be hungry once she woke up so I figured I’d make us dinner. She must have hired someone to stock the fridge, because there was fresh veggies and meat in there.

I decided on chicken pasta. I cut up some tomato and pepper to add to the store-bought sauce. Not as good as homemade, but I didn’t have everything I needed to make it from scratch, and I didn’t know how long Violet would sleep for.

I stuck the chicken in the oven and let the sauce simmer on the stove, then I headed to the living room to relax. I ended up reading one of the books on the coffee table. It was well-loved, with tons of sticky tabs poking out and a few passages highlighted. My favourite were the little notes she scribbled in the margins.

Okay, wait…am I…into this?

Note to self: start running.

Note to self: beat up Amber for unlocking this side of me when I have no one to try it with.

The last one was in capital letters at the end of the book.

An evil grin grew on my face the more I read.Note to self: thank Amber for making V read these books.I was going to have so much fun with this information.

She was right. I was insatiable.

We finisheddinner a few minutes ago. She scarfed it down so fast I would have thought she didn’t taste it, if it weren’t for all the moaning and groaning she did. I kept having to adjust myself, especially after I let my imagination run wild coming up with our post-dinner activities.

Once she was done, I tried to help her clear the counter. She was having none of it. Apparently, whoever cooked was exempt from cleaning. I wanted to help because that meant we could get to the fun part sooner, but I didn’t want to spoil the surprise so I plopped back down on the couch and watched.
