Harper watched, still frozen in the doorway.
“I had itlooklike I was going to. I wouldn’t hurt you. And no, I’m not going to hurt you, either,” he said to Harper.
She didn’t respond, watching wide eyed as I got up.
“No, because I’ll cut you,” I said, facing him now.
Rook only grinned as he slipped on his shirt. “And I’ll let you, baby.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“And here I thought you liked me being a gentleman. Especially after I made you come. Fine.” He stepped around the bed, and I held up the knife.
He didn’t care, though. He pushed against the knife until it pressed between us, the blade on his chest.
“Go ahead,” he said, smiling. “Plunge it deep into my chest. Watch me bleed out on the floor right here. I would never bother you again, but you would have a mess to clean up depending on where you stab me.” Reaching up, he grabbed a handful of my hair and forced my head back. I looked up at him, trying to press the knife harder, but scared I would actually hit skin. “I’m not going to hurt you, Regan.”
He was rough as he kissed me again, biting once at my lower lip, but I stayed rooted to the ground, his hand still wrapped in my hair. “I’ll see you later, baby.”
“Don’t come back.”
“Text me when you need me. For any needs.” He smiled at Harper and then back to me. “Murder. Orgasms. I’m here.”
“You forgot your knife,” I said.
“Keep it.”
“Why? Some weird gift to help protect me from you?” I asked, the words dripping with sarcasm.
He grabbed his helmet, already heading to the window.
“Sure, Rebel. All here to protect you. Not that it would be careless to carry a murder weapon around with me.Definitelynot that.”
“Rook!” I yelled.
He shoved his helmet on, waving as he slipped out the window without another word.
“Rook!” I yelled again, but he was already gone.
As the adrenaline faded, anger surged through me. I had invited Rook into my life, and now it felt like I had crossed a line I could never uncross.
Fourteen
Rook
The next night, I watched from the tree line as Regan stepped out into the night. The light from the sconces on the house made her flicker in the shadows. She had dressed up tonight with her dark hair pinned up, and the red dress she wore clinging to her perfectly. It would be hard to miss her, impossible even, and it would make it so much easier to find her when she got to the dinner.
The black BMW she seemed to always use pulled up, its sleek surface reflecting the moonlight. I couldn’t tell from here if she had a driver or if it was her dad behind the wheel, but it didn’t matter. Cameron would be with her at some point tonight.
I had found out Cameron would attend a dinner party at his country club tonight, and Regan would be there with him. From what I could gather, she was nothing more than an accessory at his parties. Most people knew nothing about her besides she liked art, and her dad was smart enough to let everyone leave it at that.
I still couldn’t believe I hadn’t known about her. I spent more time watching Cameron and his business than her, and heseemed to keep her locked away from what I could gather. When she did attend these things, she was invisible to others.
Not anymore, though. Now that I knew her, it would be impossible for her to be invisible. Even if she wanted to be.
I had stuck a tracker on the car even though I wasn’t worried about losing them tonight. It would at least help me keep tabs on her whenever she left the house. Following her car from a distance had become a routine this week, although she barely went out. It seemed like, aside from these parties, she really didn’t have much involvement in his business. I still wasn’t sure how much she actually knew about her dad and his dealings, but she did like to stay hidden.
It barely took ten minutes to get to the country club’s main building. I stayed back, making sure she wouldn’t hear the bike rev behind them. Regan got out, moving gracefully as she walked up the large steps. Her laughter echoed in the night air as she talked on the phone before quickly slipping it into her bag.
