“Yeah, and when doesyetcome? What if I don’t want to hide it anymore? Did you think about what I wanted or have you only been worried about what you want?”

“Evie, you know that isn’t fair. You aren’t the one risking everything here.”

“No? It sure feels like it,” I snapped, not ready to say the rest of my sentence.

Because Aiden was my everything, and I was beginning to think I was risking everything, too.

The thought alone felt pathetic.

I’d been in love with Aiden for as long as I could remember, and I only hoped that one day he would wake up and realize he was in love with me. That it would be a love story to rival the movies.

Not a hidden story I had to hide away.

He reached to wrap his arms around me again, but I pushed him back.

“No. I’m not going to do this. I’m not acting like I want this hidden anymore.”

“So instead of having a conversation about it, you are going to literally push me away and get angry?”

“Does it matter? Would you go out there and tell everyone right now? No, you wouldn’t, so what’s the point?”

“No, I wouldn’t, but that doesn’t mean I never would. And you pushing me away like this is exactly why I wouldn’t. How am I supposed to trust you actually want this for good when you are going to push me away and get angry the first second something isn’t right?”

“Oh, so this is my fault now?”

He ran a hand down his face with a sigh. “No, not at all, but you aren’t even giving us a chance before you turn back into psycho Evie, who wants to destroy everything that might be good.”

The words felt like a slap and I let them sting.

“Then I guess it’s lucky for both of us that I destroyed it before you ruined your life.” I spun on the heel of my boot, ready to run, but paused. “And I don’t need a bodyguard, or a friendor anything else—don’t feel obligated to come after me. You can feel assured that I’m not your responsibility this time.”

I walked out, heading right to the back door and out to one of the cars.

I didn’t give anyone a chance to say anything—it’s not like I could tell them what was happening anyway—and I took off, heading to the one place that wouldn’t give me any thoughts of Aiden.

Chapter 38

Aiden

By the time I made it out front, Evie was gone and so was my car.

The pack had followed me out, clustering behind me without a word.

Finally Hero stepped forward. “What did you do to piss her off this time?”

I shot him a look out of the corner of my eye, hoping he understood I wasn’t going to talk about it right now.

He stayed silent, rooted beside me, waiting as everyone else walked back inside, all of them chalking it up to Evie’s attitude.

The world fell silent around us, but I knew it wouldn’t stay that way for long.

“So, what did you do this time?” Hero asked.

“Pissed her off, what else is new?”

“Nothing with that part, but you staring at her leaving all pathetic is new. Normally, you let her go or run after her like you’re going to kill her.”

“Maybe I’m giving her a head start this time,” I said, realizing for the first time I didn’t even know where to start looking. She wouldn’t have gone home, and I knew she would want to go somewhere comfortable to stew in anger.
