Before I could get my hand back in hers, the doors opened, and out walked some of the cheerleaders.

“Jason!” Trina called. I winced.

“Hey, Tri, how are you?”

“Good. You?”

“Good.”

“Damn, Jason, you look good. Summer workouts hit, huh?” Briana asked. I scratched the back of my neck.

Before my path had crossed with Sadie’s, I’d been a dog. And this summer, I had hooked up with two of the five girls stepping out of the elevator.

“You going to the Omega party?” one of them asked, sliding next to me. Carly? Marely? Whatever her name was had her hand on my chest. Jesus, these girls moved way too fast. I frowned and looked around, only to see Sadie standing off to the side watching the whole interaction.

“Just coming back from it, actually.”

“Aww… want some company?” Briana asked, her eyes clear with the offer she was making. “I wouldn’t mind another round with the infamous shortstop. We had fun last time.”

Before I could answer, Sadie whispered, “Excuse me,” and hopped into the elevator.

“I actually gotta go.” I smiled tightly and swept past them with just enough time to hold the door I was pretty sure Sadie had called to shut open.

“Hey, you leaving me, bird?”

“You looked busy,” she mumbled, stepping back into the corner of the elevator.

I got in and pressed the close button on the doors and leaned against the wall. It was obvious by the way Sadie was avoiding making eye contact, and that pretty smile she had just for me had completely vanished, that she wanted her space.

The question was, should I give it to her?No, the thing inside me answered, and I knew he was right. I stepped forward, and her head tipped back to look at me. Her gaze was weary and so much like the one she had given Harrison when he’d approached her. I fucking hated it.

“You have quite a fan club,” she mentioned. I shrugged because she wasn’t wrong. Most of it came with being who I was and what I played and the trajectory of the kind of career I was supposed to have.

“They don’t matter.”

“Because you’ve already…” She let the words hang in the air.

“No.” Though I had. “Because I like you.” I decided to lay it out.

It was probably too much too fast, but fuck, how long had this girl been driving me crazy already? She looked at me, her eyes unreadable. She blinked once, twice, then, to my fucking shock, she snorted.

“Right.” She rolled her eyes. “What is this?” She crossed her arms over her chest.

“Excuse me?”

“Is it some kind of initiation?”

“Initiation?”

“Are you rushing the Omegas or a frat or a club or something?” I studied her. I both hated and loved that her body was all covered up with my hoodie.

“No.” I shook my head, wondering where that was coming from.

“Some kind of bet with one of your sports buddies?

“Sadie—”

“If you let me in on the joke, I can help you,” she offered.
