"The names on that list will cause upheaval across every border territory simultaneously." He laces his fingers together on the table. "The courts will be occupied for years. Thegovernance of half a dozen regions will be in question. Human settlements will interpret it as confirmation that dark elf authority is corrupt from top to bottom." He holds my gaze. "You will have handed the actual rebels the best recruitment argument they've ever had."

"The corruption is what handed them that argument." I keep my voice even. "I'm just making it visible."

"Visibility doesn't fix governance. It destabilizes it."

"So does leaving it in place." I shake my head. "This is the same argument, Thalen. Every time. The system is corrupt, but exposing it will cause damage, so we look away and the corruption continues and eventually the damage happens anyway, except now it's a rebellion we didn't prevent when we could."

He takes a moment to respond. "I'm prepared to offer you something."

"Really?”

"Bury the broader investigation. Keep Malrec as the singular accountable party — he's already exposed, he's already disgraced. End it there." He opens his hands. "In exchange, the charges against Edria are formally dropped. The child is acknowledged without court challenge. Your governance of this territory is secured without further opposition." His eyes are steady. "Everything you want for her. Guaranteed."

I stare at the page with his offer and frown.

Everything I want for her. Safe. Clear name, acknowledged child, no more political pressure from nobles using her as a target. It would take one decision and one night's sleep and the problem resolves.

I think about the seven nobles on that list, and the settlements under their governance, and how many versions of Oxwood exist across those territories right now with theirown Edrias trying to keep their families fed through impossible conditions.

"No," I say.

Thalen absorbs this. "You're choosing this fight over her safety."

"I'm choosing to end the conditions that made her unsafe." I stand up. "Her safety was never something you were going to guarantee — you were going to use it as leverage to close an investigation that threatens people you protect." I move to the tent entrance. "The investigation goes public today."

He doesn't try to stop me.

The formal presentationto the assembled nobles takes two hours. I lay out the evidence in order — the financial trail, the manufactured rebellion, the seven confirmed names. I include the broader territory analysis and the probable connection to eight additional estates, clearly labeled as unconfirmed pending continued review.

The room is very quiet when I finish.

Two lords ask questions. Three say nothing at all. Fenrath stares at the table for the full two hours and doesn't look up once.

The investigation is now public record. Whatever anyone tries to bury in the next week will make them visible. That won't save everything, but it makes the cover-up demonstrably worse than the exposure.

Cyran's rider finds me before I've cleared the hall entrance.

The message is four words:Malrec seen. Near Oxwood.

I read it once and hand it back.

"How long ago?" I ask.

"Two hours."

Two hours. Enough time to have already moved, already positioned, already done whatever a man with nothing left and loyal stragglers still in the field decides to do with his final piece of leverage.

I don't finish the thought. I'm already moving.

EDRIA

Ican't sleep.

This is not new. Sleep has been unreliable since the prison, arriving late and leaving early, and the forge is where I end up when I've run out of patience for lying in the dark. I'm not working — the fire is banked, the tools on their hooks, the room quiet and smelling of cold ash and iron. I'm just sitting on the workbench with my knees pulled up and a cup of water going warm in my hands.

The guard on the lane entrance made his last pass twenty minutes ago. I heard his footsteps. He'll come back around in another forty.
