“Hard to forget,” she answered drily.That accursed wolf was the sole one responsible for Connall’s death some years ago, when he had tried to expand his territory.They weren’t even bordering their pack lands, but old alliances had been summoned and so they went, they fought, and they lost their Alpha that day.
“She was his mate,” he said after a pause.
“No!She’s human!”
“And that was her demise.The High King ordered us to keep an eye on her, but not to expose ourselves.She doesn’t know there are wolves in this land.He wants to keep it that way.She needs to heal.”
“And you thought it was fine installing the little lamb next to a house that’s going to be full of wolves in just two days?”
“That house isn’t ours; it belonged to the High King’s Beta.He gave it to her.Besides, it’s not as if I was advertising you were living next door...”
“It’s not me I’m worried about, I can take care of my wolf.But your nephews will be here shortly.”
“And I’ll receive them at the packhouse.Don’t worry, Matháir.I’ll take care of everything.”
She snorted.
“You’d better ...that girl is like a lamb for the slaughtering with those rascals running around...”
“They’re grownups, Matháir.Adult wolves.”
“Oh, I saw the maturity of those young men when they tried to cut the grass with a flamethrower...”
“They never did turn it on.They were just joking...”
“Or when they decided to put lemon juice in my milk...”
“It helps to curdle...”
“Or when they decided to cut down a tree because it could fall during a storm ...only, the tree fell on top of my car.”
A brief pause.
“That, they did,” he admitted, begrudgingly.“But they bought you a new one,” he added hastily.
“I liked my old car.”
“Matháir, that’s beside the point,” he said in an exasperated tone.“That girl needs a lot of healing, and that’s what she’ll get from us.”
“Of course she will, I’ll take good care of her.”
He chuckled.
“I know, Matháir.I know...”
Evelyn said her goodbyes, her mind already on her next-door neighbor.
