Nick’s eyes narrowed. “As far as I’m concerned, that door is closed.”

“She isn’t into the lifestyle?” Colt asked.

“No.”

“Hmm …” Max took a long sip of his bourbon. “Is this the woman you brought the last time you were there? She got the whole club talking.”

“Oh?” Nick sucked an ice cube into his mouth and chewed it.

“Word had it that she freaked out during Jordan’s knife play demo.”

Nick swallowed the ice water. He had kicked himself repeatedly for throwing Jannie into the deep end like that. “I wouldn’t exactly call leaving early ‘freaking out.’”

Jordan said nothing, just took another swig of Weller. But Nick could tell he disagreed. Leaving during a demo, especially if seated in the front row, just wasn’t done; it was poor etiquette, and Nick knew it. He hadn’t missed the stink eye Jordan had shot his way when he and Jannie stood up.

For a few uncomfortable moments, they all sipped their drinks, saying nothing.

“OK,” Max finally said. “Show us this aircraft you obviously want us to help you buy.”

CHAPTER 30

Jannie

“OK, take it off. Let me see it.”

“Not here.”

Jannie lovingly looked to the passenger seat, where her latest retail therapy trophy, a cream Prada James Jean print Fairy bag, sat in its soft white duster. She had struck gold at her favorite consignment store; the bag was from the spring 2008 collection and nearly impossible to find in mint condition.

“Why not?” Sarah’s disappointed voice came from the car’s sound system.

Jannie glanced at her cell, mounted on her car phone holder, to see her friend’s pouting face. “Patience. I’m almost home. I’ll show it to you when I pull into the driveway.”

“Tease! You can’t just show it in its dust bag and expect me to wait!”

“Sorry, babe, safety first.”

Ignoring Sarah’s huff, she turned onto her street, slowed down, and waved to a neighbor crossing with a tiny Chihuahua in a shiny pink jeweled harness.

Jannie laughed softly.

“What?” Sarah asked.

“My neighbor. He’s walking Taco Belle.”

“The big guy with the Chi?”

“The very one.”

Sarah laughed. “Gotta love a man who isn’t embarrassed to be seen on the end of the leash with that size dog.”

Jannie smirked. “That’s a dog?”

“Don’t be a dog snob, now.”

Jannie smiled. “OK.” In front of the neighbor’s house, she spotted an old shit box of a white Subaru that had no business still being on the road.

Huh. She hadn’t seen one of those since she was little.
