The room breathes.

Callahan clears his throat from the doorway. "Cray has the floor."

Right.

Second thing.

My hands are not shaking. This seems unlikely, so I check. They are still. Swollen knuckles. Tape residue. Hands that have spent fourteen seasons making the first pass and blockingthe lane and holding everything in place because the body understood what the mouth refused.

I look at Cole.

You do not owe us a speech.

No.

I do not.

"Caleb Wren and I are together," I say.

The room goes silent again.

This silence is different.

Not bad. Not good. Processing. The sound of twenty-three men receiving information and deciding what kind of room they are going to be in after it lands.

Mik's hand tightens on Cole's knee. Cole does not move except to put his hand over Mik's. Wes looks at me the same way he looked before, which is to say he looks like Wes and therefore contains either no feelings or all of them. Luca closes the biscotti container. Callahan's expression does not change, but his jaw loosens by half a millimeter.

Two seconds.

Three.

Isaac says, "Wait, is that why you're always in the film room at midnight?"

There is one perfect beat where the entire room considers the question.

Then Jonah loses it.

Cole follows. Mik bends forward, laughing into his hand. Luca says something in Italian that sounds deeply unhelpful. Even Callahan turns toward the wall like the wall has suddenly become fascinating.

The laugh that follows is the best sound I have ever heard in this building.

Not because it is applause. Not because it makes the thing heroic. Because it makes the thing ordinary. It takes theinformation, absorbs it, and gives it back with the same room that was here five minutes ago. Louder, maybe. Worse behaved. Still mine.

"No," I say when I can speak.

Isaac looks horrified. "No?"

"Not why."

"But related?"

"Hale."

"Right. Stopping."

He sits down fast.

Cole looks at me then. Not at Caleb's name hanging in the room, not at the retirement, not at the hip. At me.
