He chuckled. “I would not miss it, not even if your father made an attempt on my life in the night.”
“Don’t say that!”
He grinned. “I shall see you tomorrow, my love.”
“You really have to go?” She pouted a little.
“In order to marry you, I must be alive,” he teased. “If I stay, we really may not make it to the altar without that duel your father is desperate to have with me. Alas, I have learned that your father is stubborn. He will undoubtedly be back, and I would rather not take the risk of him bursting in while my head—or something else—is between your thighs. We were lucky no one heard us.”
She blushed at the thought of him entangled with her once more, sinking into her depths. “I suppose I can wait just one more night to sleep beside you.”
“One more night,” he repeated, almost as if to console himself.
He stole one more kiss and then, with a bright smile that softened his features and made it seem like a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders, slipped out of the bedchamber, closing the door behind him.
Alone again, but not at all lonely, Selina flopped back onto the mattress and gazed up at the canopy of her bed, feeling as if she had just won the greatest prize in all the world.
A love story of her own, far better than any fiction. A love story that made all of her favorite books, her favorite heroes, pale in comparison.
Tomorrow would be the beginning of the next chapter, and she could not wait to read on.
