“She worked overnight.”

“We can purchase one.”

“At what store?”

Amy opened a map. I took the phone.

“We share.”

She looked at the bed. Then at me.

“This violates rule five.”

“Amendment.”

“We do not have time for formal review.”

“Emergency lodging doctrine.”

“That is not funny.”

“It’s a little funny.”

The corner of her mouth betrayed her.

“We create a barrier,” I said. “Pillows. Separate blankets. No contact.”

“Routine accidental contact?”

“None.”

“You control your sleep?”

“I remain on my side.”

“You fell asleep on me at the diner.”

“I was seated.”

“Gravity still existed.”

Amy placed her suitcase on the luggage rack.

“We need to prepare for dinner.”

Discussion postponed. Not resolved. I accepted the delay.

The sponsor dinner was held in the hotel ballroom. Couples sat at assigned tables and answered light interview questions between courses. Amy barely touched her meal. I noticed.

“Nervous stomach?”

“No.”

“You’ve moved the same green bean six times.”

“The sauce is heavy.”

“Eat the bread.”
