“Yes.”
Evelyn’s practiced composure eased.
“Make sure it becomes your business before the finish line.”
I disliked advice from my ex. I disliked useful advice from my ex more.
“I have to go,” I said.
“Good luck, Amy.”
“With the job?”
“With choosing.”
I walked away.
Dani’s apartment smelled like garlic when I arrived. She wore an apron that said KISS THE COOK, THEN CHECK HER FORM. I stopped in the doorway.
“Where did that come from?”
“Lola.”
“Did she select the wording?”
“Gloria helped.”
“That is inappropriate family involvement.”
“She supports romance.”
Dani kissed me. The day loosened around the contact.
“What are we eating?” I asked.
“Food.”
“Specificity.”
“Pasta.”
“We ate pasta Wednesday.”
“Different emotional pasta.”
I removed my coat. She read me immediately.
“What happened?”
“Both interviews went well. I may have choices.”
“Good.”
“I dislike choices.”
“That is a lie.”
“I dislike uncertain choices.”
