Neither person makes major race decisions on behalf of the other.
Dani had not made a race decision for me. She had changed the conditions under which I was choosing intimacy and withheld the change. I took out a pen and wrote three possible responses.
Withdraw from the marathon.
I crossed it out. Her lie did not own my race.
Require Dani to withdraw.
I crossed that out too. Her race choice remained hers.
No training contact. No couples content. Romantic space until her disclosures and actions match.
I left the third line. It was not a punishment disguised as policy. It was the consequence I could actually enforce without controlling either race. Then I opened the marathon plan Miguel had sent. My next run was recovery only. My life continued. That felt impossible and ordinary. Tessa knocked softly.
“Tea.”
“I do not want tea.”
“I brought toast too.”
“I do not want toast.”
“Then I will leave both here and feel heroic.”
She set them on the desk. At the door, she stopped.
“What happens tomorrow?”
“I end every remaining training-partner exception.”
“Miguel already has the plan.”
“I mean all informal training involvement.”
Tessa waited.
“And the relationship?”
The handwritten rules offered no answer.
“I don’t know.”
For once, uncertainty was not missing information. It was the first decision I had to make with all of it.
Chapter Twenty-Four
The Break
Dani
I spent the night on the gym floor. Not literally. Blake would have objected to the liability. I stayed in Studio C until two in the morning, sitting against the mirrored wall while the automatic lights switched off around me. The live interview had resumed without us. Blake announced a technical interruption. Evelyn and Vanessa completed the segment. Marisol and Jen answered questions. The audience left. The sponsor requested a formal review.
None of it mattered. Amy’s face when every honest thing I had ever said became questionable did. Rose found me at seven. She turned on the studio lights. I covered my face.
