“Scale?”

“Eleven.”

I kissed her cheek.

“Promotion manager.”

“Certification student.”

“Marathon finisher.”

Amy corrected me.

“Person.”

The correction mattered.

“Person,” I agreed.

We turned off the studio lights. Geraldine waited in the cardio area. Amy touched the console.

“Tomorrow morning?” she asked.

“Easy run?”

“Yes.”

“Plan?”

“Three miles.”

“Romantic.”

“Recovery.”

“Same thing.”

We left together. Amy checked the lock twice. I carried the speaker she had already reminded me not to forget. Nothingabout the exit proved forever. It proved we could leave the same room with the same information and choose the same direction.

Epilogue

The Long Run

Amy

Six months after the marathon, Dani sent me a calendar invitation titled SPRING CHARITY 5K DECISION MEETING. The invitation contained the race link, transfer policy, fee, charity information, and a proposed team name: EMOTIONALLY TWELVE CATEGORIES. I accepted the meeting and rejected the team name. We registered together after breakfast using my credit card because the points category was objectively better. Dani forwarded the confirmation before I could ask.

We stood in the Long Run Club office, which had previously been a storage closet. The gym had added one desk, two chairs, and a wall calendar. I had added labeled folders. Dani had added a plant that was already dying.

“You are still opposed,” she said.

“To the name.”

“The registration was fully disclosed.”

“Yes.”

“Authorized payment method.”
