“Never?”

“No.” She shakes her head, wiping her tears away.

I stop breathing for a moment because what the fuck.

Then I remember her telling me that when that useless piece of shit would buy her something, he’d send an invoice to her a few days after, and that’s why the first time I asked her to grab coffee with me she was persistent on paying her way.

She thought I didn’t notice the five dollar bill she put in my bag, but I noticed it, and I slipped it into her bag a few days later.

“I’m sorry.” She suddenly sniffles, exhaling sharply.

“Hey,” I capture her cheeks in the palm of my hands. “Don’t apologize to me, okay? There’s nothing to be sorry for.”

She hiccups. “I’m not on my period, but that’s very thoughtful of you,” she wipes her tears. “I’ve just been getting in my head lately.”

“You can talk to me,” I grab her hand and kiss her knuckles. “I’m always here for you, you know that?”

I don’t think she fully realizes the effect she has on me.

I’d do absolutely anything for this girl.

She pouts, blinking away her tears. “Has anyone ever told you how perfect you are?”

“Someone might’ve a couple times before.” I smirk.

“Well, you are,” she squeezes at my hand. “The most perfect guy I’ve ever met.”

My chest tightens again, and all I want to do is kiss her.

“Well, Lil-Bug,” my thumb caresses her cheek. “You’re pretty perfect too.”

She’s more than perfect.

She scoffs. “Yeah right, I’m a total mess.”

I smile, leaning in and planting a kiss to her temple. “If you’re a mess, then I’m a disaster.”

She laughs, tilting her head back, her eyes crinkling in the corner. “I guess we can both be messy disasters together.”

“That we can.” I respond with a smile.

If it meant being together, I’d be anything with her.

Chapter 42

Lilly

I’ve been avoiding him.

Every time I saw him my heart would race, my thoughts would scatter, and I’d feel this overwhelming urge to be with him constantly—to the point I had visions of gluing myself to him, and even sewing our skins together so he’d never leave.

I sound fucking crazy when I put it like that.

But I was down bad. Likerealfucking bad. The kind of bad where every glance and every touch sent my mind spiraling. And the only way I could tame my heart was by creating distance between us.

It was the only logical way to keep myself from falling in love with him.

But it failed because the minute I sent the texting cancelling on him, I regretted it.
