Rook's ears turned slightly red. Zane choked on his coffee. I felt heat creep up my neck as the memory of being between them flooded back in vivid detail.
We ate breakfast in relative silence, the weight of what we were about to attempt hanging over us. Even Horrace seemed subdued, his tentacles wrapped tightly around my shoulders, his colors muted grays and blues.
The main Bureaubuilding looked imposing in the morning light, all gleaming glass and magical wards that shimmered faintly in the air. We were buzzed through security, Fenric's credentials opening doors that would normally require extensive clearance.
The mini-skeletons marched ahead in formation, their tiny backpacks bouncing with each determined step. Jeffrey led the group with the confidence of someone who'd made this journey before even though he'd never been, his bony finger pointing directions at intersections.
"They're taking us toward the central tower," Fenric observed, his tablet tracking our progress. "That's unusual. The Vault should be in the sub-levels."
We followed the skeletons through increasingly secure areas, each checkpoint requiring more verification. By the time we reached the final door, even Fenric looked slightly nervous.
"Beyond this point, there are no official records. The Vault Beneath exists outside normal Bureau documentation."
The door opened, revealing a narrow staircase spiraling down into darkness. The air that drifted up smelled ancient, heavy with magic that made my teeth ache.
The skeletons didn't hesitate, marching down the stairs in perfect formation. We followed, Rook taking point with his enhanced senses, me in the middle surrounded by the others, Horace clinging tightly to my shoulders.
We descended for what felt like hours, though my phone's clock insisted it had been only minutes. The staircase seemed to exist outside normal space, each step taking us deeper not justphysically but dimensionally, passing through layers of reality like descending through water.
Finally, we reached the bottom. The skeletons stopped at a blank wall, turning to look at me expectantly. Jeffrey pointed at my pocket where the bone shard rested, then pointed at the wall.
Understanding clicked. I pulled out the shard, its surface warm despite the cold air, and pressed it against the stone.
The wall dissolved like smoke, revealing a portal of swirling darkness.
"Here we go," Milo whispered, his hand finding mine.
Together, the five of us stepped through.
The Vault was exactlyas I remembered, and somehow worse. Massive and circular, with walls that curved up into impossible darkness. Chains of captured starlight hung from the unseen ceiling, swaying gently despite the lack of wind. And bones. Thousands upon thousands of them, arranged in spiral patterns that hurt to look at directly.
The power here was immense, pressing against us like a physical weight. My head immediately began to ache, the Oracle's mark burning hot on my forehead as it responded to the concentrated magical energy.
"Holy fuck," Zane breathed beside me, his fae senses clearly overwhelmed. "This place..."
"Is wrong on a fundamental level," Rook finished, his body tense and ready for threat. "We shouldn't be here."
"But we are," I squeezed Milo's hand tighter. "Let's do what we came for and get out."
The mini-skeletons had already moved to the center of the Vault, arranging themselves in a circle around a clear space on the floor. Jeffrey beckoned to us urgently, his tiny form somehow commanding despite his size.
"They're preparing the summoning circle," Milo's voice held equal parts excitement and terror. "Winter, you need to be in the center with me. The others should form a protective ring around us."
We moved into position, Rook, Zane, and Fenric creating a triangle at careful distances around Milo and me. The bone shard in my hand pulsed with increasing intensity, responding to our proximity to the Oracle's scattered remains.
"The bones are aware of us," I realized, watching as small tremors ran through the patterns covering the walls. "They know we're here."
"Of course they do," a voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere. "I've been waiting."
The Oracle materialized in the center of our circle, their form more solid than during my first visit but still shifting, caught between states of existence. Their galaxy eyes fixed on me, then moved to Milo with what might have been curiosity. The shackles were ghostlike, as if us being here physically was giving them strength.
"The young necromancer who dreams of me," they spoke with something approaching warmth, the glass shard voice an odd contrast. "You wish to see what I was before I became this."
Milo's voice shook only slightly as he responded. "If you're willing to show us."
The Oracle studied him for a long moment. "And if I am not what you hope to find? If the corruption runs deeper than memory and time?"
"Then we'll deal with it," I spoke up, feeling the mark on my forehead burn brighter. "Together."
